While the episode has its origins in the action-adventure genre, much of what makes it a winner is the infectious friendship evident in the scenes between Tosk and O'Brien.
"Vortex" is the first episode to deeply examine the unknowns of Odo's mysterious origins, and the result is a powerful character episode that successfully gets into the crux of the constable's loneliness and his quest for people like him.
The episode's relevant theme is the prisoners' error of continuing the pointless violence; neither faction can put aside their hate and think their situation through.

While most of it was among the more interesting scenes in "Vortex", Odo's last line about "Unfortunately, the only person who can tell me is less reliable than Quark" was a line I could see coming from a long way off, and didn't do anything to make the trip worthwhile.
"Vortex" wasn't something to get angry at or about, but it wasn't something that enraptured me, either.

One of them is that the internal logic of the episode doesn't work (there's no way to justify Tahna possessing the antimatter converter without making Odo seem utterly incompetent), and the other is that it was just too damned early in the season for a "loyalties get tested" show.
DS9 has the opportunity to show us a lot about the mechanics of the Federation, not to mention a great deal about how it's viewed outside the normal spheres of influence we see.
Along the same lines, since DS9 is mostly confined to Bajor and its environs, we have a unique opportunity to see the true culture of a _planet_ in the Trek universe, something else we've never seen.

The suspenseful episode "Displaced" is the second-to-last episode of the season and once again wonderful.

DS9 also garnered a reputation for having some of the best Trek episodes made to date.
In any case, by the time the Dominion War came into full swing from the latter part of the fifth season until the end of the series, virtually all fans were more than satisfied.
The mirror universe was featured in five episodes of the series: "Crossover", "Through the Looking Glass", "Shattered Mirror", "Resurrection" and "The Emperor's New Cloak".

I am assuming that 1000 Star Date units equal one year, that one season in all series except for the orginal one takes over the span of one year, the stardate callendar was re-set a couple times, and if a date is not mentioned in the episode, it takes place after the previous episode.
I am sorting the episodes by the date given in the episode This explains why some episodes may not be listed in the order they where aired in.

DS9 (sobsob) stood out for being different and trying something else besides the "boldly going" part and I congratulate them for that.
It was an astounding episode, and to my knowledge the only ever episode of any Star Trek where the word "******" was used.
DS9 is also good, but it was just a soap opera, not sci-fi enough, the battle parts of the later seasons were ok i guess.

I think we'd be well served if aspects of the story, completely unknown to Croden, really _did_ turn out to be true in the end.
-- As an unfortunate juxtaposition, I read the DS9 novel _The Siege_, in which Odo is "revealed" to always keep the same mass, in the same 48-hour period when I saw "Vortex", which clearly invalidated that idea.

I'm hoping that when DS9 ends, the writers and producers are smart enough to end Voyager, too, and put Paramount's Star Trek resources into one show with many of the same writers as DS9/TNG.
After all, it's episodes like 'the inner light', 'the visitor' or 'past tense' that we Trekkers are proud of and that makes Trek so superior to silly bulls**t like 'battlestar galactica'.
