  Voskhod
The lack of space also meant that the Voskhod crews did not wear space suits, although one was taken on the Voshkod 2 mission.
Finally, the Voskhod 2 spacecraft carried a large inflatable airlock that allowed cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov to exit and re-enter the craft.
Voskhod was carried into orbit by a variant of the same R-7 rocket that was used for Vostok and Sputnik, but featured a larger upper stage to carry the heavier capsule.

 Voskhod 2
Voskhod 2 set another space milestone as one of the cosmonauts on board became the first person to "walk in space".
After his ten minutes outside the Voskhod, Leonov found that his suit had stiffened to the point where he could not re-enter the airlock.
After coming back inside, there were problems with sealing the hatch properly, and this was followed by a troublesome re-entry, when like some earlier Vostok spacecraft, the Voskhod's descent module did not separate cleanly.

 Voskhod 2
Of the five Voskhod spacecraft, that are to be completed in the first quarter of 1965, the following program is laid out: two will be devoted to flights of a single cosmonaut, without a spacesuit, on endurance missions of 12 to 15 days.
2 or 3 spacewalks would be conducted on each flight, with the EVA cosmonaut using a manoeuvring apparatus to back away as far as 50 to 100 m from the spacecraft.
This delay was due to the layout of Voskhod, which left the Vostok cabin instruments and Vzor visual orientation device in their original place, but mounted the crew seats perpendicular to the original orientation of the Vostok ejection seat.

Voskhod 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Voskhod 2 (Russian: Восход 2) was a Soviet manned space mission.
The Voskhod spacecraft was fitted with a special inflatable airlock that was extended once it had reached orbit.
This was necessary because, unlike the Vostok, the crew lands with the Voskhod descent module.

 Voskhod 2
Vostok 2 finally landed near Perm in the Ural mountains in heavy forest at 59:34 N 55:28 E on March 19, 1965 9:02 GMT.
Although trumpeted to the world as a triumph (with suspect TV pictures and film of the spacewalk which did not match), this was the swan song of the Soviet space program and for Korolev.
Follow-on Voskhod missions were cancelled as too dangerous, and America took the lead with Gemini 4 and subsequent missions taking the records for duration, rendezvous and docking, and spacewalking.

Summary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the case of Voskhod 2, Cosmos 57 was used to conduct tests of the inflatable airlock to be used by Alexei Leonov on his world first - a spacewalk from Voskhod 2.
Further Voskhod missions were planned for 1966 and beyond, but they were cancelled in order that work could be concentrated on developing and building Soyuz.
Voskhod 2 lands in the Ural Mountains, near the town of Perm which is nearly 1000 kilometres north of the originally planned landing site - the crew has to wait nearly 24 hours before being reached by a rescue party, and a further 24 hours before flying out from the landing zone

The First Spacewalk: The 35th Anniversary
Unlike a previous Voskhod launch with the first multi-member crew (a mission inspired by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev), the Voskhod 2 mission was driven by scientific vision.
After analyzing the Voskhod 2 reentry capsule, engineers reported to Korolev that the spacecraft's parachute had been jettisoned by a signal from a special probe when it touched the ground.
If the probe had grazed treetops during the Voskhod 2 landing, it would certainly have detached the chute leaving the capsule and crew to free-fall.

Voskhod weighed 5,300 kilograms (11,684 pounds), about 570 kilograms (1,260 pounds) more than Vostok, and so the Voskhod rocket was more powerful than the Vostok version.
Voskhod 1 was so cramped that the three cosmonauts could not wear space suits for protection.
Voskhod 2 landed 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) off target in Siberia and bounced down a hill.

The Voskhod was produced between 1964 and 1969 by the Leningrad-based factory that went under the name of GOMZ until 1965, as LOOMP until 1966, and which is known to this day onward as LOMO.
In my view, the Voskhod is a cross-over between a Smena-type camera (which is a line of cheap amateur cameras), and the Leningrad rangefinder, which was a big technological success for GOMZ and the whole of the Soviet Union, from the late 1950's right up to the late 1960's.
Th Voskhod's viewfinder is of the Galileo type, which means that it's bright, brilliant and big, a bit like the one of the Zorki-4.

 The Voskhod 2 mission revisited
The Voskhod 2 spacecraft carrying Pavel Belyayev and Alexei Leonov was launched at 0700 UT from Baikonur and put into a 169-473 km orbit at 64.8 degree inclination and a period of 90.9 minutes.
Voskhod 2 was announced by TASS as transmitting voice on 143.625 MHz, 18.035 MHz and 17.365 MHz and having a "Signal" beacon transmitter on 19.996 MHz.
Voice from Voskhod 2 was picked up in Sweden by the telecommunication administration's spectrum monitoring station in Enkoping at 1316-1318 UT on 17.365 MHz.

However, Voskhod was little more than a modification of the Vostok space capsule, while the Gemini was a next-generation spacecraft, and by the end of the Gemini program the US had demonstrated manned spaceflight capabilities well in advance of those of the Soviet Union.
"Voskhod 2" was a two-man mission, the crew consisting of Pavel Belyaev and Aleksei Leonov, but in classic Korolyev style it also accomplished yet another space victory for the USSR: the first space walk or EVA.
Voskhod 2 was fitted with an inflatable airlock, through which Leonov emerged to float in space.

Voskhod (Russian for "sunrise"), was the second of the Soviet Union's series of piloted spacecraft.
The Voskhod vehicles were very similar to their Vostok predecessors, except that the cabin was enlarged to hold up to three cosmonauts - by dispensing with some instruments and the ejection seat for the original one pilot).
The Voskhod 2 craft parachuted into a remote region of the Ural mountains, where the two cosmonauts spent two days in the wilderness before rescue teams found them.

During Voskhod 2's second orbit, Leonov stepped from the vehicle and performed mankind's first "walk in space." After 10 min of extravehicular activity, he returned safely to the spacecraft through an inflatable airlock.
Finally on 19 January 1965, Gemini 2 rose from the launch pad on the tail of almost colorless flame from Titan II's hypergolic propellants, and in a 19-minute flight confirmed the readiness of a fully equipped Gemini spacecraft and the integrity of the heatshield during reentry.
The average navigational accuracy of the seven flights was within 2 miles of the aiming point, much better than previous flights.

On the first, three seats were squeezed into a converted Vostok, giving their occupants no room to wear spacesuits – a life-threatening gamble in order to mount the first three-man mission.
The two-man Voskhod 2 achieved another on-orbit spectacular when Alexei Leonov carried out the first spacewalk.
To enable this, Soviet engineers had designed an airlock which could be inflated in orbit to form a tunnel for exiting and reentering without having to let the air out of the cabin.

The world's first spacewalk took place on March 18th, 1965 during the flight of Voskhod 2 when Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov entered an inflatable airlock attached the side of the spacecraft and then minutes later exited into the empty void.
The Voskhod spacecraft was actually a modified Vostok with safety features such as the ejection seat removed to accommodate more than Vostok's one man. At the time the configuration of the Voskhod was not known in the West.
In retrospect, Voskhod 2 can be seen as the last of the Soviet manned space spectaculars, as the Gemini program, the first flight of which was launched less than a week after Voskhod 2, caught and surpassed most Soviet-held manned space records.

Information coming out of Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union suggests that Voskhod was basically a public relations gimmick by the Soviet government to upstage the United States in the space race.
In the second Voskhod flight, they mounted a collapsible airlock to Vostok to allow a cosmonaut to exit the spacecraft in the first extra-vehicular activity (EVA) or space walk.
While the United States, during the two years after the last Voskhod flight, went on to equal and greatly bypass these Soviet accomplishments, there were no new Soviet manned spaceflights until Soyuz 1 in April 1967.
