Sabrina Salerno: illustrated guide to 'Lady Marmelade'
While France released the song under it's french title as 'Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi', but in it's original album-mix, the dutch release features two unique remixes (a 7" and a 12"-version) and a unique megamix on the b-side (in the same two variations).
Both chose 'Lady Marmelade', one of the cover-versions on the 'Sabrina'-album, and issued a 7" and a 12" each, but the releases in both countries are very different nevertheless.
The rarest item today is the dutch CD single.

Hits still came - "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight)", "Voulez-Vous", "Chiquitita" and "I Have a Dream" all were taken from this album, but in the light of Punk and New Wave in the UK, many felt that Abba were past their prime and were looking for something new.
This time they were far better prepared for the contest, and already had an album's worth of material released by the time of the show, held in Brighton, England.
It is ironic that this, and the final album, The Visitors ( 1981) show a songwriting maturity and depth of feeling that is distinctly lacking on their earlier recordings.

 Comments on ABBA-songs
Album: Voulez-Vous, 1979 Quinton Clem, USA: Frida in my opinion doesn't get her fair share of credit for some of the great ABBA records but this one was meant for her and she handles it beautifully.
Frida ::finally:: gets a lead vocal in on this album (they were at the "let Agnetha sing lead on just about everything" stage of their career, which alienates even the most diehard Agnetha fans like myself) and Frida sings it for all it's worth.

That it took nearly a year to record Voulez-Vous is an indicator of the creative and personal box in which the four members of ABBA found themselves at the end of the '70s.
ABBA's fourth album appeared after the group had arrived as major stars, and it shows the quartet at the absolute top of their game.
This collection of most of ABBA's A- sides was put together when it became clear that the group had no enthusiasm and not enough songs for an entire studio album of new material.

If Voulez Vous was their disco album, the followup, Super Trouper, a slang term for the giant spotlights used in their live shows and stadia, maintained a sound consistent with winning albums like their self-titled effort and Arrival, but with the energy of Voulez Vous.
Super Trouper is generally considered Abba's finest album.
Even though SUPER TROUPER may not sound as fresh as that album, primarily because ABBA is noticeably focusing on craft here, it still has a set of songs that rivals that of ARRIVAL.

This release (comprising songs drawn from the albums ABBA, Arrival, ABBA--The Album, and Voulez-Vous) covers the group's most inspired years (1975-1979) and every track is a winner.
The lyrics plumb no great depths of sophistication but the pop sensibility of the songs and performances of ABBA at their best has rarely if ever been bettered, and this album is the perfect demonstration of that.
Outside of their greatest hits compilations, ABBA albums were always a mixed bag.

The first of ABBA's 1979 albums, Voulez-Vous, was seen as a departure from previous work, as it was a much more personal collection in lyrical terms, with several songs about the tribulations of romance from which the group members were suffering.
During this period, ABBA were at Number One on the UK album chart for 36 weeks of a possible 192.
The only group to have spent more weeks at the top of the UK album chart by the end of 1991 was The Beatles.

The Artistry of Nona Hendryx: Labelle
Pretty soon everybody was slaughtering the French language by repeating the chorus "Voulez Vous..." As much as this tune helped break LaBelle into the big time, eventually it became somewhat infuriating when the girls were stereotyped as a disco act because of it.
By 1974 the underground buzz around LaBelle had become a roar and they recorded their biggest selling album, "Nightbirds" which included one of the biggest dance songs ever, "Lady Marmalade." This song hit number one and in no time you could hear bratty pre-teens everywhere offending their parents by talking dirty in French.
The single "Far as we Felt Like Going," the worst song on the album but written by the Lady Marmalade team, failed.

But it was "Nightbirds," LaBelle's first Epic album, that sent the group soaring into the superstar stratosphere, largely on the strength of "Lady Marmalade" ("Voulez-Vous Couchez Avec Moi Ce Soir?") which became a disco anthem of the '70s.
The trend-setting singer/songwriter Laura Nyro, long a Bluebells fan, was even more impressed by LaBelle and recorded her landmark album, "It's Gonna Take A Miracle," with the group.
In the 1960s, she led the superstar "girl group" Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells; in the '70s, she was the driving force of rock's first all female band, LaBelle; and in the '80s, her talent as a solo artist dominated the music scene.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad "Frida" Andersson Biography (ABBA)
Putting personal issues aside, ABBA continued performing, releasing the 1979 album Voulez-Vous, which spawned five British Top 5 hits and went gold in the U.S. Though 1980's Super Trouper sold and charted well internationally, it marked the end of their success in America.
In 1981 Lyngstad and Andersson divorced; with the couples barely speaking to each other and disco in decline, ABBA called it quits in early 1982, after releasing their final album, The Visitors.
Anni-Frid Synni Lyngstad, better known simply as Frida, was born November 15, 1945 in Ballangen outside of Narvik, Norway.

Latest ABBA News from ABBAMAIL: January 2002
Paradoxically, however, the "limited" success in the US only serves to highlight their popularity in the rest of the world: The Album sold itself into platinum and both, Voulez-Vous and Arrival were certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).
The strains of touring (hinted at in "Super Trouper" (1980), and a schedule that included incessant promotional appearances, meant that within the ABBA caravan, "I Do I Do I Do I Do" was heard less than "I Don't".
Though with a noticeable addiction to repetition in the chorus [think "I Do I Do I Do I Do" (1975), "Money, Money, Money" (1976), "Knowing Me Knowing You" (1977) and "Gimme Gimme Gimme" (1979)], the mark of the group's musical genius was that whilst they were definitely Abba and definitely pop, their signature was variety.

 ABBA - Seventies Music - Randy's Rodeo
I would be overreaching to say that ABBA achieved gravitas, but later records - like The Album (1978), Voulez-Vous (1970), and Super Trouper (1980) - were demonstrably more consistent and sophisticated than the sugar-laden pop that established them as global superstars.
But, these fledgling ABBA records were quintessentially silly, and, as such, they grow undeniably annoying upon repeated listens.
Unexpectedly, however - and without recording is single new note - the 1990's became almost as profitable for the mellifluous Swedes as had been the 1970's.

"Lady Marmalade", a sexy, funky disco song (with an come-hither French chorus, "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi") about a New Orleans prostitute became a massive hit in 1975 and one of the first mainstream disco hits (Jones and Kantonen, 1999).
LaBelle never regained their former momentum after Nightbirds and "Lady Marmalade", in spite of several hits and some critically acclaimed albums like Phoenix (1975) and Chameleon (1976).
After Pressure Cooker, LaBelle signed with Epic Records and recorded an album, Nightbirds, with Allen Toussaint, a famous record producer.

That year Andersson and Lyngstad married, as had Ulvaeus and Faltskog in 1971, although the latter couple separated a few months later; in fact, romantic suffering was the subject of many songs on the quartet's next LP, 1979's Voulez-Vous.
ABBA's fourth album appeared after the group had arrived as major stars, and it shows the quartet at the absolute top of their game.
The most commercially successful pop group of the 1970s, the origins of the Swedish superstars ABBA dated back to 1966, when keyboardist and vocalist Benny Andersson, a onetime member of the popular beat outfit the Hep Stars, first teamed with guitarist and vocalist Bjorn Ulvaeus, the leader of the folk-rock unit the Hootenanny Singers.
