Vox Clamantis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vox Clamantis ("the voice of one crying out") is a Latin poem of around 10,000 lines in elegiac verse by John Gower that recounts the events and tragedy of the 1381 Peasants' Rising.
In Vox Clamantis, the same general trope is employed, but Gower emphasizes the role of the political, with a dire view of the effects of the polis and political on both the man and the cosmos.
Gower outlines the proper duty of each of the three estates of society and argues that none of those alive were close to acting in a proper manner.

The material which we find in the Mirour de l’Omme is, to a great extent, utilised again, and, in particular, the account given of the various classes of society is substantially repeated, in Gower’s next work, the Latin Vox Clamantis.
Moreover, in one manuscript 7 the whole of the first book is actually omitted, and no mention at all of the Peasants’s rising occurs.
In any case, the main substance of Vox Clamantis is an indictment of human society, the corruptions of which are said to be the cause of all the evils of the world.

The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Middle Ages: Topic 1: Texts and Contexts
The Mirour, the French poem, was addressed primarily to a bilingual upper-class audience; the Vox,, the Latin, to a clerical audience; and the Confessio, the English, perhaps following Chaucer's lead, to all educated readers.
Gower seems to have completed the Mirour and most of the poem that he entitled Vox Clamantis before the Uprising of 1381.
Vox Clamantis refers to the saint whose name Gower bore, John the Baptist, whom all four gospels refer to as "the voice of one crying out in the wilderness" (Matthew 3.3, Mark 1.3, Luke 3.4, John 1.23) who will prepare the way for the Lord, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 40.3.

John Gower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He is remembered primarily for three major works, the Speculum Meditantis, Vox Clamantis, and Confessio Amantis, three long poems written in French, Latin, and English respectively, which are united by common political and moral themes.
The first work which has survived is in the same language, however: it is the Speculum Meditantis, also known by the French title Mirour de l'Omme, a poem of just under 30,000 lines, containing a dense exposition of religion and morality.
Gower's second major work, the Vox Clamantis, was written in Latin: it takes as its subject the state of England, and incorporates commentary on the Peasants' Revolt that occurred during the composition of the poem.

The social critique of Vox Clamantis was read primarily by ecclesiasts and men of law, though it must also have been known to some in the royal court and perhaps even the king himself.
Gower's Latin Vox Clamantis may be the work to which Richard alludes in the 1390 Prologue to the Confessio Amantis, when he invited Gower aboard the royal barge on the Thames to encourage him to write "[s]om newe thing.

Elliott Carr, in his recent Vox Clamantis column [April 6], laments business people becoming wealthy at the expense of Outer Cape towns and off-Cape people.
In your April 619 issue of The Cape Cod Voice, Elliott Carr's Vox Clamantis column appears to echo the sentiments of the original author of the poem "Vox Clamantis," John Gower, who took the aristocratic side against the peasants who revolted in 1381 against the heavy handed attempts to enforce a poll tax.
This time the peasants are the 20 hardworking business owners in North Eastham who had property rights taken away from them in 1988 by a reactionary zoning change that allowed the town to continue to tax them as businesses while regulating them as residences.

It is not necessary, however, to assume that this incident, which was put forward by the author as a reason for the presentation of his book to Richard, was actually the determining factor of his decision to write in English.
The years which followed the composition of Vox Clamantis, assuming it to have been produced about 1382, were a period of hitherto unexampled productiveness in English poetry.
The statement that to Gower’s Confessio Amantis Chaucer owed the idea of a connected series of tales is quite without foundation.

The use of literary referents in 13th-century England is explored, with 'Vox clamantis' and 'Testament of Love' as examples.
Examination of Thomas Usk's 'Testament' reveals a political reference to John Gower's 'Vox clamantis', which provides additional support for the theory of the insular nature of England's literature during this period.
