Topic: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was a science-fiction film directed by Irwin Allen and released in 1961.
The name of the film is an inversion of a phrase appearing at about its time, concerning the exploration of the Arctic Ocean by nuclear submarines, namely, "a voyage to the top of the world." No large submarine can reach the ocean floor in the high seas and safely return.
The popularity of the TV show inspired Mad magazine to spoof the show, their version being called Voyage to See What's on the Bottom, featuring a submarine called the Seapew.

Fantastic Voyage, directed by Richard Fleischer, is usually considered the preferred of these two movies, although its pseudo-science about shrinking a surgical team and putting them inside the body of a stricken scientist to save his life, is as risible as that of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
Oddly enough, the Fantastic Voyage trailer is cropped at the sides, while Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is letterboxed.

The people who made the movie and TV show Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea came up with some good ones, at a time when little was being done in the way of creating alternate worlds through special effects on television.
Voyage is a show, which, when it was good, was very, very good, but even when the scripts stunk, as they often did in the show's final seasons, the cast, lead by the brilliant Richard Basehart as Admiral Harriman Nelson and David Hedison as Captain Lee Crane, always did their best.

"Sea" benefits from the irascible Peter Lorre, always making some nasty comment along the lines of "He irritates me" or "You’re always so sure of everything!" The relationship between Nelson and Captain Crane (stoically played by Robert Sterling) swings between naval protocol and father-son resentment, quickly yielding to the next big jeopardy.
Still, there’s a boyish grandiosity to the shots of Seaview slicing through the depths or in the death grip of a giant octopus (especially the inside shot from the glass nose).

While Irwin Allen's Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea may seem "hokey" by today's standards, its effects and story line were extremely advanced for its time and the movie is still considered a "classic" by many.  The movie was so successful that it also spawned a TV show that ran for 4 years (1964-1968).
Most people disagree with him and soon the admiral finds him self in a race against time as the Earth moves closer to boiling point, the nations of the world are sending warships and submarines to stop the Admiral, and he is pushing his own crew ever closer to mutiny.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is filled with many of the great underwater stereotypes we have come to know and love.  We have the super-advanced underwater sub with large glass windows, everything is "nuclear this" and "atomic that", and we even have our classic attack of the giant rubber squid tentacles!

There are a lot of scenes from that series that had an impact on youthful me, remembered forever out of context; but one I recall with eerie distinctness was watching an episode called The Sky's On Fire, which had the Van Allen radiation belt around the Earth suddenly igniting and slowly constricting, threatening doomsday.

Voyage was probably the most serious of Irwin Allen's efforts, although it certainly had its comic moments.
