Voyageurs National Park - Ash River Trail
Ash River Trail is the central entrance to Voyageurs National Park, an area made famous by the legendary French-Canadian fur traders that paddled a route between Lake Superior and Lake of the Woods in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Voyageurs National Park has thousands of acres of land and water on the southern edge of the Great Canadian Shield — a geological area formed by huge, slowly moving sheets of ice, at times two miles thick.
Voyageurs, prospectors, and big logging camps are now history, but the Ash River Trail, built on the old logging railroad bed has become a small resort community at the end of County Road 129 which winds through a dense forest and bog.

CERC International Falls Biological Station Research
Rainbow smelt, which were first found in Voyageurs National Park waters in 1990 could have significant effects on the parks aquatic ecosystem and in particular its cool- and cold-water fish species.
The fish stocks of the four dominant water bodies of Voyageurs National Park, Rainy, Namakan, Sand Point, and Kabetogama Lakes, are subjected to many of the same anthropogenic factors that have affected the nearby Great Lakes.
From biological and political perspectives, a significant issue results because of the possible effects of the introduction, both incidental and intentional, of exotic fish species and non- native fish genotypes on the aquatic ecosystem of Voyageurs National Park and many other national parks.

 CARA: Statement by Senator Lessard
The Park Service is still pushing for Wilderness Area Designation of a large segment of the park notwithstanding the fact that this is a proposal so bad that even former Governor Elmer L. Anderson, who is known as the father of Voyageurs National park opposed this wilderness proposal.
The facts are that Voyageurs National Park should never have been designated a national park in the first place but rather a national recreational area.
And to the west of Voyageurs, the National Park Service together with the U.S. Forest Service proposed the designation of a "Voyageurs National Historic Trail" along the entire Minnesota/Ontario border taking in Lake of the Woods.

Fire in Voyageurs National Park chars more than 650 acres
Park officials were monitoring it closely but were letting it burn instead of actively fighting it because such fires can benefit the forest, Johnson said.
The park remains open, but a relatively small area along Rainy Lake has been closed to land-based public use as a precaution, and several trails and smaller lakes in the park's interior also have been closed.
The fire, located between Shoepack and Loiten Lakes in a remote part of the Kabetogema Peninsula, was continuing to creep and smolder through jack pine, balsam fir and spruce trees in the park on the Canadian border, said Mike Johnson a spokesman for the park.
