		Vrancea is the original hearth of the poem of the Romanian’s ethnogenesis, the ballad “Miorita” — a folk poetry heard by writer Alecu Russo in the mountain village of Soveja in 1853, which he later included in a collection of folk literary writings.
		Vrancea county is located in the southeast zone of Romania; lying at the bend of the Eastern Carpathians, it represents a genuine connecting link between the three great historical provinces: Moldavia, Wallachia and Transylvania.

	LIFE Nature - vegetation of Vrancea Mountains
		Due to its altitude and climate conditions the characteristic vegetation of the Vrancea Mountains is represented by forests (although the surface is not continuous, considering the massive deforestation from the interwar period) and secondary mountainous pastures.

	Seismotectonics of the Romania Vrancea area
		The seismicity of the Romanian Vrancea area has peculiar features: (1) strong earthquakes occur at intermediate depths in a very narrow source volume; (2) the seismogenic zone is situated beneath continental crust, at the SE corner of the highly arcuate Carpathian arc; (3) no evidence for active ongoing subduction is found today.
		Beneath the Vrancea region the last of these segments, which is still attached or just about to detach, gives rise for the spatially limited occurrence of seismicity.

	Romanian Institute for Applied Seismology
		In Vrancea, earthquakes’ epicentres are situated between 44.9-46.5 degrees northern latitude and 25.5-28.0 degrees eastern longitude and give birth to events mostly at 60-180 km depth (subcrustal earthquakes).
		Earthquakes born in Vrancea have tectonic origin (as 90% of all worldwide earthquakes), with bigger magnitudes than other types of seismical events.
		In the epicentre (Vrancea), the sensors (seismometers and accelerometers) capture the first shock and transmit a radio signal to Bucharest, where the decision of warning is taken if the estimated magnitude exceeds 4.8 Richter.

		The first corresponds to the major earthquake of March 4, 1977, occurred in the upper part of the slab, while the second is associated with the major event of November 10, 1940, occurred in the lower part of the slab.

		The Vrancea zone of Romania constitutes one of the most active seismic zones in Europe, where intermediate-depth (70-200 km) earthquakes of magnitude in excess of Mw=7.0 occur with relative high frequency (~ 20 years) in a geographically restricted area within the 110° bend region of the southeastern Carpathian orogen.
		Accordingly, the Vrancea zone appears to be a unique place to establish evidence for active lithospheric delamination as opposed to relic subduction.
		Building on results from the Vrancea 2001 project, new geophysical experiments in the Carpathian hinterland will ultimately be critical for evaluating competing relic subduction / active delamination geodynamic models for the origin of mantle seismicity in the Vrancea zone.

	Romania: Death in suspicious circumstances of Ion Putoi and Toader Elinoiu
		Amnesty International is concerned about reports that Ion Pusoi and Toader Elinoiu were severely ill-treated by police officers in two separate incidents in Nereju, Vrancea county, and that their deaths may have resulted from the alleged ill-treatment.

	Roving Romania, Landrover tours
		This is a hiking/trekking route in the wild and beautiful Vrancea Mountains on the ‘bend’ of the Carpathians.
		I thought I was familiar with it but during the two weekends of researching the route in which I covered some 800 km, I discovered areas I didn't know existed.
		The first part of the route is well covered by the "Muntii Nostri - Vrancea" book and its associated map which I have photocopied and annotated.

		Cutremurul de sambata din Vrancea, care a inregistrat o intensitate de 4,5 grade pe scara Richter, nelinisteste nu numai pe o anumita parte a specialistilor din Romania, dar si pe vranceni, care de doua zile numai despre asta discuta.
		Se poate spune ca in ultimul timp in Vrancea se produce un cutremur de peste 4 grade pe scara Richter pe luna, iar vrancenii se tem ca acestea sa nu fie de fapt semnele precursoare ale unui seism mult mai puternic, anuntat, de altfel, de toti specialistii.
		Trei cutremure de peste 4 grade pe scara Richter au avut loc in Vrancea in mai putin de 4 luni de zile, toate acestea fiind precedate de miscari tectonice destul de importante.
