In the Popol Vuh, the twins are also responsible for killing the monster bird Vucub Caquix (Seven Parrot), who may be represented by six macaw-headed markers on the sides of Copán's Great Ballcourt.[Cortez, 1997] This bird had falsely claimed dominion over the sun and moon and was terrorising all living creatures.

This may indicate that Vucub Caquix who only ate yellow fruit must have originally been a bird form.
The picture also shows a yellow ball attached to a star form within the mountain where the bird stands holding the arm in his beak.

According to the Popol Vuh story, it is Vucub Caquix, the vain bird who represented the sun of the previous world, who tore off the arm of one of the Hero Twins, namely Hunahpu.
Sorenson cites Michael Coe for this information; however, giving a description of Vucub Caquix and this particular incident, Coe writes, "This creature was a gigantic birdmonster of magnificent appearance.
It is therefore the bird Vucub Caquix who tore "off the arm of a herogod"; it was not bitten off by a crocodile.

Reports Submitted to FAMSI - Richard D. Hansen
The Popol Vuh mentions that the supreme deity of the previous era was a bird macaw known as Vucub Caquix, who was tricked and defeated by the Hero Twins of the story.
Often, Maya rulers appear to have imitated the avian characteristics of Vucub Caquix of the Popol Vuh which allowed them to inherit legal authority (Hansen, ibid; Kappelman, ibid).
Extensive excavations of the triadic structures of Monos, Danta, and Tigre pyramids at El Mirador, as well as Structures 13, 27 and 59 at Nakbé showed no evidence of burials associated with the triad architecture.

There are images from Izapa (Figure 1.) and on Early-Classic vessels, (Figure 2) which for example, confirm the story of the killing of Vucub Caquix, the major bird deity.
These and other images suggest that the underlying religion, with its heroes and demons was in place very early in the history of Mesoamerican peoples.

One of the illustrations depicted the Hero Twins of Aztec mythology fighting a 'demon bird' named Vucub Caquix; this demon was depicted as a vulture with a mass of small, writhing snakes where the wings should be.
I looked him up in several other sources, and it turns out this was just artistic licence; Vucub Caquix was more of a bird-man type demon.
However, the concept of birds with snakes where the wings should be inspired me; more snakelike features were added to my inner vision, and the Vuquix is the result.
