Vulcanization   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Vulcanization (vulcanisation in Europe) is the process of cross-linking elastomer molecules to make the bulk material harder, less soluble and more durable.
Vulcanisation is an irreversible process, like baking a cake, and must be contrasted strongly with thermoplastic processes (the melt-freeze cycle) which characterise the behaviour of the vast majority of modern polymers.
This is a fundamental difference between rubbers and plastics, and sets the conditions for their applications in the real world, their costs, and the economics of their supply and demand.

Backsizing carpet with hot melt composition of ethylene copolymer, atactic polypropylene and vulcanized rubber - United ...
The higher amounts of vulcanized rubber are desirable when the compositions are to be employed as pressure sensitive adhesive for improved cohesive properties.
Some suitable vulcanized synthetic rubbers include such vulcanized diene containing rubbers as vulcanized polyisoprene; vulcanized polybutadiene; vulcanized butyl rubber; and vulcanized copolymers of conjugated dienes and at least one other copolymerizable monomer such as styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate.
The vulcanized butyl rubber is a vulcanized or cured copolymer of from about 99 to about 90% by weight of isobutylene and from about 1 to about 10% by weight and preferably about 3% of a diene and preferably a conjugated diene, such as isoprene or butadiene.

Method of adhering unvulcanized rubber to vulcanized rubber through vulcanization - Patent 4371411
The rubber component of the unvulcanized rubber composition to be adhered to the above described vulcanized rubber composition through vulcanization is a rubber blend consisting of polybutadiene as an essential component and at least one of styrene-butadiene rubber and a rubber of natural rubber and/or polyisoprene rubber.
The optimum composition of the rubber component of the unvulcanized rubber composition is determined depending upon the kind of the rubber component of the vulcanized rubber composition.
Adhered rubber sheets were produced in the same manner as described in Example 1, except that natural rubber was used as a rubber component of the vulcanized rubber sheet in place of the styrene-butadiene rubber, and rubber blends shown in the following Table 1 were used as rubber components of unvulcanized rubber sheets.

The rubber dispersion of the third step may be obtained by mixing the friable rubber mixture obtained in the second step with water and further comminuting the rubber particles in the resulting mixture by any method effective to produce rubber particles of the required size.
The swelling liquid may be removed from the rubber either by flashing off or by addition of a non-swelling liquid which is miscible with it but not miscible with the rubber: the latter causes separation of the rubber from the swelling liquid.
Reclaimed rubber or "reclaim" is sometimes used to replace some of the virgin rubber in a compound: this is produced as a result of the effect of high temperature (in excess of 150.degree.

 What is Vulcanized Rubber?
The problem was that rubber melted in hot weather, and became brittle in cold weather.
The first application of what came to be known as vulcanized rubber, made its debut in the form of puckered ruffles on fancy shirts.
The term "vulcanized rubber" did not come from Goodyear, but was coined by a friend of Hancock's, who named the process after the Roman god of fire, Vulcan.

It is to be noted that all the schemes of reactions, structure of intermediates and finished compounds are hypothetical and are intended to serve to explain the effect of the modifier and method of the present invention.
In another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for devulcanization of cured elastomers, an especially vulcanized rubber, wherein cured elastomers are carried to a state of stressed polymer structure and in this state they are treated by organic cations, which are generated by the modifier as claimed in claim 1.
Samples of devulcanizates, which were obtained by means of devulcanization at the ratio of modifier to vulcanized rubber being within the range 4.0-10.0%, were treated with toluene or with xylene so as to obtain a stable suspension.

Since the surface of the structure of the present invention has a ragged profile, the structure of the invention may be modified so as to have desired abrasion-resistance, corrosion-resistance, thermal conductivity, electric conductivity and stain-resistance, by properly defining and controlling the shape of the ragged profile.
Therefore, the structure of the invention may effectively be used in an industrial production line for manufacturing rubber products such as tires and so on, in which a non-vulcanized rubber does not adhere to conveyer ducts or machining parts having the structure of the present invention.
As a result of applying the present invention to parts which are brought into contact with non-vulcanized rubber in a tire manufacturing production line, the non-vulcanized rubber did not adhere to the parts, and therefore the conveyance of the non-vulcanized rubber was effected very smoothly.

MSN Encarta - Archive Article - 1939: Dentistry
During the past year, dentistry celebrated the centennial of the discovery of vulcanized rubber by Charles Goodyear in 1839.
In the course of the century, since "vulcanite" (hard rubber) was adapted for use in making dentures or "plates," many attempts have been made to introduce new low cost denture materials such as celluloid, aluminum, gum-resins and others.
Outside of gold and stainless steel or the comparatively newer chrome alloys, all denture materials have thus far failed to displace vulcanite in popularity.

Patent Pending - Inventions and Technology Updates: Charles Goodyear, Vulcanized Rubber
Rubber in its natural state is a nasty and almost useless substance, but in 1823 a Scottish chemist name Charles MacIntosh filed for a patent on a method for making waterproof fabric using rubber.
Spots on the sample had superior characteristics of cold and heat resistance, and thus "vulcanized" rubber was born.
One of the main objects made with vulcanized rubber was water hoses, especially garden hoses.

The surface modifications of a synthetic vulcanized styrene-butadiene rubber (R1) using a chemical treatment [halogenation with trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCI)] and a treatment with oxygen plasma were compared.
Treatment of R1 rubber with 2 wt% TCI produced greater surface modification than the oxygen plasma and the modification was extended over a thicker region of the rubber when it was treated using TCI.
However, higher T-peel strength values and more noticeable cohesive failure in the rubber were obtained for joints produced with chlorinated R1 rubber than for those produced with oxygen plasma-treated R1 rubber, due to the creation of a less rough and weaker oxygen plasma-treated surface.
