Vulcanoid asteroid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vulcanoids are hypothetical group of asteroids that may orbit in a dynamically stable zone between 0.08 and 0.21 astronomical units from the Sun, well within the orbit of Mercury.
Vulcanoid asteroids, if they exist, would be a special subclass of Apohele asteroids.
The dynamical lifetime of a Vulcanoid is measured in tens of millions of years, and according to David Vokrouhlicky, Paolo Farinella and William F. Bottke, Jr.

Vulcanoids are hypothetical asteroids that may orbit in a dynamically stable zone between 0.08 and 0.21 astronomical units from the Sun, well within the orbit of Mercury.
If Vulcanoids exist, for the expected albedo they may be no more than 60 km in diameter, since previous searches would have found anything larger.
Nevertheless, it is thought Vulcanoids could exist because the region of space being searched is gravitationally stable, and all similarly stable regions of the solar system have been found to contain objects.

Vulcanoids are species that are similar to Vulcans.
Some vulcanoids - Romulans and Rigelians - were susceptible to contracting Tuvan Syndrome, a degenerative and (as of 2375) incurable neurological disorder.
The term "vulcanoid" is a construct of Memory Alpha as a convenient way to describe species similar to Vulcans.

Although "vulcanoid" has had different meanings, the definition in The Unabridged Federation Standard Dictionary is "a being similar in physical form and chemical makeup to the dominant humanoid lifeform on the planet Vulcan and its colonies, hence derivation of the term.
Vulcanoids are especially weak in tasting sweet things, although their sense of taste for salty and bitter things is relatively good.
Vulcanoids also have two testes in a scrotal structure that is close to the body, not pendulous, and a prostatic body that produces and stores seminal fluid.

 FAQ | Vulcanoid Asteroids
Vulcanoid asteroids are most likely to reside in the stable Vulcanoid zone (see Question 1.3: "What is the stable Vulcanoid zone?"), between 0.08 a.u.
As seen from the Earth, the stable Vulcanoid zone is between 4.6° and 10.5° from the center of the solar disk.
Vulcanoids with a mean distance of between 0.08 a.u and 0.18 a.u will orbit the Sun in 8.26 to 27.87 days respectively.

Collisional evolution in the vulcanoid region: implications for present-day population constraints
We explore the effects of collisional evolution on putative Vulcanoid ensembles in the region between 0.06 and 0.21 AU from the Sun, in order to constrain the probable population density and population structure of this region today.
Dynamical studies have shown that the Vulcanoid Zone (VZ) could be populated.

 Research Interests
The Vulcanoid Zone (VZ) extends inward from about 0.21 AU, a stability limit set by eccentricity perturbations due to Mercury and the other planets, to about 0.07 AU, where thermal conditions and dynamical transport mechanisms such as Poynting-Robertson (PR) drag and the Yarkovsky effect rapidly remove smaller objects.
Although a modest population of Vulcanoids may well exist, they will be particular hard to detect, due to their angular proximity to the Sun and relative faintness against a twilight sky.
The limitations that have plagued past ground-based visible-wavelength searches for Vulcanoids can be greatly alleviated by reducing or removing the various observing problems (clouds, variable hazes, turbulence, scattered light, high airmass, etc.) associated with the atmosphere.

 Talk:Vulcanoid - Memory Alpha
Actually, Vulcanoid is a real hypothetical term if you're into that stuff, however it does not apply to the Vulcanoid this page refers to.
But as "Vulcanoid" isn't a Trek word, isn't an independent English word applicable to Trek (like polywater), and appears to have been made up by someone on Memory Alpha, I'm a little uncomfortable with this as a Trek Universe article as currently written.
First of all, I was always under the impression that "Vulcanoid" was a type of Humanoid, and I don't think there's a problem with Vulcans (and all other "Vulcanoids") being called humanoid.

T'Khasi is considered the evolutionary and genetic source for all known vulcanoids, because the Vulcans are genetically related to all other lifeforms on their planet, whereas the vulcanoids on many other worlds have turned out to have alien DNA.
The blood of most vulcanoids, including the T'Khasi Vulcans, is made up of hemoglobin based on copper.
This may be supported by the fact that certain societal outcasts, Vulcans who chose to live a non-technical, traditional life, and members of certain monastic groups seem to have much longer, and often curved, ear tips.

Further, although ground-based observational searches have been conducted, they are not particularly contraining, allowing significant numbers of objects with diameters d as large as 30 to 50 km to exist.
We have recently investigated the viability of the Vulcanoid population ensemble using previously developed collision codes (Stern, 1995, AJ, 110, 856), with the objective of determining how large a population might in fact be able to survive.
We find that, for the assumption of a collisional equilibrium population power law (i.e., Dohnanyi) structure, the critical population whereby the largest primordial objects in the population have survived for 4.5 Gyr appears to be one with less than several hundred objects with d > 2 km.
