Founding father of modern vulcanology dies
PARIS, Oct 16 (AFP) - One of the pioneers of modern vulcanology, French scientist Jean-Louis Cheminee, has died of lung cancer at the age 66, the Paris Institute for Global Physics (IPGP), where he worked until his death, announced on Thursday.
Cheminee's big contribution was to use sophisticated chemical analysis of lava flows and volcanic gas, which led to greater understanding about the internal structure of volcanoes.
His many expeditions included a long Franco-American mission, from 1973-76, which exposed the volcanic chain that dots the subterranean ridges on the floors of the world's oceans.

Chapters 1 (Prologue to the Nightmare) and 2 (The Nightmare Revealed) deal with seismology and vulcanology, two significant areas of scientific research which are providing archaeologists with fresh insights into the collapse of ancient civilisations, in particular the collapse of the Minoan civilisation in the wake of the Thera eruption.
In Chapter 2 AC discusses the role that the scientific investigations in vulcanology, especially with regard to the eruption of Mount St Helens in the USA in 1980, play in helping archaeologists/historians to assess the progress of the Vesuvian eruption itself.
It seems on the basis of this new research that the destruction of Pompeii was not caused by the fall of pumice and ash, but by a highly explosive, pyroclastic activity, which has an impact upon the archaeological record.

This text represents Professors Sigurdsson and Carey's years of teaching a vulcanology course with a strong environmental theme to geologists and general science majors.
It utilises the environmental impact of volcanic eruptions as a means of teaching many fundamental scientific principles of volcanic activity and their relationship with the Earth's interior, and processes taking place in the biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.
Thus, although this book covers vulcanology, an important sub-field of Earth Science, it is much broader in scope than "traditional" vulcanology texts, as it also addresses the numerous environmental aspects of vulcanism.
