Extinction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A species may become functionally extinct when only a handful of individuals survive, which are unable to reproduce due to poor health, age, sparse distribution over a large range, a lack of individuals of both sexes (in sexually reproducing species), or other reasons.
Endangered species are species that are in danger of becoming extinct; several organizations attempt to preserve recognized endangered species through a variety of conservation programs.
The degradation of a species' habitat may alter the fitness landscape to such an extent that the species is no longer able to survive and becomes extinct.

 InfoHub - Endangered Species
Species that are on the verge of extinction are called endangered species.
A species is thought to be extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died, after exhaustive surveys in known or expected habitat, at appropriate times throughout its historic range have failed to record an individual.
A species is extinct in the wild when it is known only to survive in cultivation, in captivity or as a naturalised population well outside the past range.

 Significant species
Vulnerable: A species is eligible to be listed as a vulnerable species if, in the opinion of the Scientific Committee, the species is likely to become endangered unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.
Vulnerable: (1) For the purposes of this Act, a species is vulnerable at a particular time if, within the next 25 years, the species is likely to become unless the circumstances and factors threatening its abundance, survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.
A native species is eligible to be included in the "conservation dependent" category at a particular time if, at that time, the species is the focus of a specific conservation program, the cessation of which would result in the species becoming vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered within a period of 5 years.

 Birds Species Accounts
This species was regularly encountered during VCP Sampling and during general observations recorded in pairs or groups of 4 to six individuals, in Type B forest at ECO.
Sometimes the species was observed roosting in pairs in the subcanopy of tall canopy trees.
This species is now absent from B/F forest bamboo habitat at EI since the bamboo seeded and died in the early part of the decade.

 The Mysterious Vulnerable Species List
One of the "special features" used to classify wetlands is the presence of a vulnerable plant or animal species.
A definition of vulnerable species is provided at 6 NYCRR 664.6 (c)(5).
Determining if a species meets the vulnerable species definition is thus left to department personnel or, if challenged, to the courts.

 NSW SoE 2000: Biodiversity 6.8
For the purposes of State of the Environment reporting on aquatic species diversity in NSW, the core environmental indicator ' Biodiversity Indicator 6.12: Aquatic extinct, endangered and vulnerable species and ecological communities' is used; responses to declines in aquatic species diversity are reported using the indicator ' Biodiversity Indicator 6.13: Aquatic recovery plans'.
The recovery plans are designed to promote the rehabilitation of a threatened species, population or ecological community, with the aim of returning the species, population or ecological community to a position of long-term viability in nature.
The species was formally protected in the 1980s, later being listed as 'endangered' in both the NSW Fisheries Management Act 1994 (FM Act) and the Commonwealth Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth) (superseded by the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) in July 2000).

 WWF - African elephants
A more long-term threat to the species, however, is the reduction of habitat available to elephants in the face of expanding human populations.
The elephant's tusks, large modified incisors that grow throughout the species lifetime, occur in both males and females and are used in fights, for marking, feeding and digging.
The influence elephants have over many plant and animal species means they are often referred to as keystone species that are vital to the long-term survival of the ecosystems in which they live.

Environmental Defense - Press Release: Areas With Many Endangered Species May Soon See More
It highlights 19 counties as hot spots of vulnerability, containing 23 rare bird and 106 rare butterfly species (none of which are officially designated as endangered species).
The study finds that areas currently containing the greatest number of protected endangered species also contain large numbers of unprotected species that have small ranges in the US and are therefore vulnerable to extinction.
Ongoing efforts to preserve the habitats of protected endangered species should be expanded to include these unprotected but vulnerable species too.

 Biodiversity - Threatened Species
Endangered species are under the most threat and likely to become extinct in the near future unless the circumstances and factors threatening their survival cease to occur.
Vulnerable species are those likely to move into the endangered category in the near future unless the circumstances and factors threatening their survival cease to occur.
Rare species are those that are the least threatened, but at some risk due to their low numbers, restricted distribution or observed declines.

DEC | NSW threatened species - NSW Threatened Species Legislation
The TSC Act defines 'endangered' as a species, population or ecological community that is likely to become extinct or is in immediate danger of extinction.
A species that is 'presumed extinct' has not been located in nature during the preceding fifty years despite the searching of known and likely habitats.
A 'vulnerable' species is likely to become endangered unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.

Although this species is not abundant and taken in mixed-species fisheries, it is widespread and there is no evidence of a decline in the population.
The species is caught in largely unmanaged commercial and recreational fisheries, and there is increasing evidence of local population depletion in the Eastern Pacific and West Atlantic.
Extensive fishing and this species K-selected life history have caused substantial reductions in abundance and the virtual disappearance of this species from commercial catches in regions where it was once considered fairly common.
