  Vultee XP-54
The Vultee Aircraft Corporation was very largely the brainchild of Gerard Vultee, formerly chief engineer at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation during the time that Lockheed was owned by Detroit Aircraft.
Gerard Vultee and his wife were killed in a plane crash in January 1938.
On September 7, 1940, the USAAC announced to Vultee that they were changing the mission of the XP-54 from that of low-level combat to that of high-altitude bomber interceptor.

When the engine program was canceled, the aircraft was redesigned for the Lycoming XH-2470 and redesignated Vultee Model 84.
The first of two XP-54s built made its initial flight on 15 January 1943 and flew 86 times before it was grounded by engine problems.

One, the Vultee XP‑54, was the most traditional, with a central nacelle holding the cockpit and engine, with tail surfaces supported by booms to either side of the propeller arc.
Gerard Vultee and his wife were killed in a plane crash in January 1938 just prior to the USAAC issuing Circular Proposal R-40C.
The performance of the 3 XP prototype aircraft built was roughly the same as conventional fighters of the time and never entered production.

On the other hand the design may be entirely satisfactory but is shelved because its small margin of superiority over existing types makes reconversion impractical.

The U.S. Army banned this type of propeller configuration in late 1914 after several pilots died in crashes of planes of this type.
The Vultee XP-54 is an example of an aircraft with a pusher propeller.
Three such pusher designs were actually flight tested—the Vultee XP-re, Curtiss XP-5, and Northrop XP-56.

Performance generally was disappointing and due to the success of conventional fighters, the need for further testing of such unusual designs vanished.
Although Vultee hoped it would reach a top speed of 510 mph., its maximum was 381.

RA-31 (Model V-72) (Vultee, Northrop) 1941 = Export model; ff (as prototype V-85): 3/30/41 (p: Vance Breese) — produced with twin tails, but pilot Vance Breese refused to fly after finding dangerous tendencies during taxi tests, and it was quickly modified with a single tail — ff (as Vengeance I): 11/30/41 (p: Moye Stephens).
More popularly among the troops as "Vibrator," for its stall buffeting, and unpopularly as "Widow Maker" (a title shared with several other warplanes), undeservedly as there were no recorded in-flight structural failures — accidents were most often the result of pilot error and the Valiant's unforgiving personality with a heavy hand on its control stick.

The Northrop XP-56 was the first USAAF fighter aircraft to be built by "Northrop III".
The Northrop XP-56, like the Bell XP-52, the Vultee XP-54, and the Curtiss XP-55, was evolved as a response to Circular Proposal R-40C, which was issued on November 27, 1939.
It called for a fighter that would be much more effective than any extant--with a top speed, rate of climb, maneuverability, armament, and pilot visibility, all of which would be far superior to those of any existing fighter.
