VYATKA, or VIATKA, a government of N.E. Russia, with the government of Vologda on the N., Perm on the E., Ufa and Kazan on the S. and Nizhniy-Novgorod and Kostroma on the W., having an area of S9,100 sq.
The only railway is one from Perm to Archangel, through the town of Vyatka; the government is traversed by the great highway to Siberia, and by two other roads by which goods from the south are transported to loading-places on the Vychegda and the Yug to be shipped to Archangel.
Vyatka is one of the chief grainproducing governments of Russia.

Vyatka Province, with 14 128 households, was formed as part of the larger province of Siberia in 1719, but was subsequently transferred to Kazan Province in 1727.
In 1780, the Vyatka governorship with its center in Khlynov was formed in the course of administrative and territorial changes that were taking place in the region in the late 18th century.

Today, July 16/29, is the anniversary of the notorious declaration of Metropolitan Sergius of Nizhni-Novogord in 1927, which created the largest schism in Church history since the Roman Catholic schism of 1054 and under whose shadow the whole life of the Russian Orthodox Church continues to live.
In 1920 he was arrested and imprisoned by the Vyatka revolutionary tribunal for anti-Soviet agitation - or, according to another source, for "agitation against medicine".
On August 25, 1922 he was made Bishop of Orel, a vicariate of the Vyatka diocese while temporarily administering the Glazov diocese, but on the same day he was arrested in the Vyatka St. Triphon monastery for "spreading the illegal appeals of Patriarch Tikhon".
