The institutions for the education and training of the priesthood are: the Catholic theological faculty at the University of Würzburg, with 8 professors; the Catholic seminary for priests at Würzburg, with 75 students; the seminary for boys (the Chilianeum); and the episcopal house of studies.
The Bavarian Concordat of 1817 and the Bull "Dei ac Domini nostri", of 1 April, 1818, established the Diocese of Würzburg with its present boundaries, and made it a suffragan of the smaller and less ancient Diocese of Bamberg; the Bishops of Würzburg, however, were granted the right to the pallium.
In 752 or 753 the church of Würzburg was granted immunity for all its possessions, also secular jurisdiction, whereby the foundation was laid for the future secular authority of the bishops.

In May 1944, a Würzburg-Riese radar with the codename FuMO 214 "Seetakt" (FunkMessgerät Ort) was operational near the entrance of the "Nieuwe Waterweg", the canal to the Harbour of Rotterdam.
The German World War II interception system against aircraft mentioned on the previous page, comprised several Würzburg-Riese radar systems that were situated along the Dutch coast to intercept as early as possible the bombers of the Allied Powers on their way to Germany.
The radar equipment was situated in the nature reserve called "de Beer", now known as the harbour-area "Europoort".

The city of Würzburg was the seat of four Benedictine abbeys, namely, the Holy Redeemer's, or St. Kilian's; St. Andrew's, later known as St. Burchard's; St. Stephen's; and the Scotch Abbey of St. James.
Probably owing to laxity in observance of the rule, Bishop Bernwelf of Würzburg replaced the monks in 786 by canons who led a common life and were popularly styled Brothers of St. Kilian.
After a period of decline in the tenth century it was reformed in 988 by Bishop Hugo of Würzburg, who rebuilt the church and the monastery and placed Arnold, a monk of Hirasu, as abbot over it.

 RELEASE: Lost during chaos of World War II, mineral collection finds a way home
W�rzburg is an ancient city whose origins may go as far back as 1,000 B.C. Its cathedral was consecrated in the presence of Charlemagne in the year 788.
The university was located in the old city center and, according to Frimmel, the central regions of W�rzburg were utterly destroyed toward the end of the war: "From photos I have seen in several museums, it is pretty clear that not a single building survived.
Today, on a hill overlooking the old city, is the University of W�rzburg's Institute of Mineralogy, Crystallography, Petrology and Geochemistry.

The first Apostle of Christianity for the territory now included in the Diocese of Würzburg was the Irish missionary, St. Kilian (q.v.), who converted Gozbert the Frankish duke of Thuringia but who fell a sacrifice to the enmity of the duchess.
Outside of Würzburg special mention should be made of the church at Dettelbach and the collegiate church at Aschaffenburg.
Places of pilgrimage are: the Church of St. Nicholas (called Käppele) near Würzburg; the Franciscan monastery church near Dettelbach, and the Engelberg near Miltenberg.

Three teachers from Poland sat in on seminars for 2 months each year in WŸrzburg and passed on the knowledge they had obtained to their colleagues at the Polish school.
Meanwhile, the former participants of the further education programme in Poland have formed a network through which they pass on the special knowledge they have acquired to other teachers and therapists in their country.
Twenty weeks of further education were provided from 1993-1997, 18 of them in Poland and 2 in WŸrzburg.
