  Superconductivity
The Meissner effect is sometimes confused with the "perfect diamagnetism" one would expect in a perfect electrical conductor: according to Lenz's law, when a changing magnetic field is applied to a conductor, it will induce an electrical current in the conductor that creates an opposing magnetic field.
The next important step in understanding superconductivity occurred in 1933, when Meissner[?] and Oschenfeld[?] discovered that superconductors expelled applied magnetic fields, a phenomenon which has come to be known as the Meissner effect.
In 1935, F. and H. London showed that Meissner effect was a consequence of the minimization of the electromagnetic free energy carried by superconducting current.

BC professor recycled ideas, society finds - The Boston Globe   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
A Boston College theology professor, the Rev. William W. Meissner, committed a "serious breach of professional and scholarly standards" by recycling another professor's ideas in a recent book on psychoanalysis without acknowledging their source, according to the Boston Psychoanalytic Society, which investigated the book's scholarship last year.
Meissner, 73, a Jesuit priest, earned a degree from Harvard Medical School in 1967 and also holds degrees from Woodstock College and St. Louis University.
A colleague of Meissner's who asked not to be named said the professor chose not to defend himself during the ethics committee investigation last year because of his strong feeling that the charge was baseless.

Meissner explains that in addition to the more familiar aspects of transference and countertransference, the therapeutic alliance encompasses aspects of the therapeutic relation that make it possible for therapist and patient to work together to accomplish therapeutic goals.
Meissner draws a clear distinction not only between alliance and transference but also between alliance and the real relationship.

Superconductivity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Meissner effect is sometimes confused with the kind of diamagnetism one would expect in a perfect electrical conductor: according to Lenz's law, when a changing magnetic field is applied to a conductor, it will induce an electrical current in the conductor that creates an opposing magnetic field.
The Meissner effect is distinct from this because a superconductor expels all magnetic fields, not just those that are changing.
In 1913, lead was found to superconduct at 7 K, and in 1941 niobium nitride was found to superconduct at 16 K. The next important step in understanding superconductivity occurred in 1933, when Meissner and Ochsenfeld discovered that superconductors expelled applied magnetic fields, a phenomenon which has come to be known as the Meissner effect.

In this provocative book, W. Meissner, a Jesuit and psychoanalyst, attempts to bring about a rapprochement between psychoanalysis and religious thinking.
Most appealing is Meissner's presentation of the relationship between Dr. Sigmund Freud and protestant minister Oskar Pfister.
Further, a thourough discussion of the issues in Freud's "Future of an Illusion", and Meissner's lesser known rebuttal, "Illusion of the Future" enlightens the reader concerning the relevance of religion in the pursuit of a healthy soul in the midst of a failing civilization.

The Rev. William W. Meissner, theology professor at Boston College, committed “a serious breach of professional and scholarly standards” by plagiarizing sections of his book about ethics in psychoanalysis, according to an article in the Boston Globe.
The finding comes after a year-long investigation, by the Boston Psychoanalytic Society, prompted by complaints from Ernest Wallwork, the author whose work was plagiarized.
Wallwork had previously complained to the SUNY Press, who published Meissner’s book, but after their own investigation, the press had concluded there was no wrongdoing on Meissner’s part.

 Introduction to Superconductors
He was investigating the electrical properties of various substances at liquid helium temperature (4.2 degrees Kelvin) when he noticed that the resistivity of mercury dropped abruptly at 4.2 K to a value below the resolution of his instruments.
In 1933, W. Meissner and R. Oschenfeld discovered that a metal cooled into the superconducting state in a weak magnetic field expels the magnetic field from its interior.
In 1945, the Russian physicist V. Arkadiev first performed the now-classic experiment of using this expulsion of a magnetic field to levitate a small bar magnet above the surface of a superconductor.
