	W. C. Handy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Handy was a deeply religious man, whose influences in his musical style were found in the church music he sang and played as a youth, and in the sounds of nature in his hometown, Florence, Alabama.
		Handy wrote in his 1941 autobiography "Father of the Blues," that he was born in the log cabin built by his grandfather William Wise Handy, who became a African Methodist Episcopal minister after Emancipation.
		Handy felt he was underpaid and felt he could make more money touring with a minstrel group and after a dispute with AAMC President Councill, he resigned his teaching position to rejoin the Mahara Minstrels to tour the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

		W.C. Handy was born in Florence, Alabama, November 16, 1873, the son of former slaves.
		Handy sometimes employed untrained blues musicians in his orchestras, with such later notables as Gus Cannon and Furry Lewis passing through the ranks.
		Handy lived and worked in Clarksdale until 1909, when he moved to another musical hotspot: Memphis.

		Handy went on to compose and play classical pieces, performing "Concerto for Jazz Soloist and Orchestra" with the San Francisco Symphony in 1970, and in more recent years he has composed with the UC San Francisco orchestra.
		After a stint in the Army, Handy headed for New York in 1958 and was soon hired by bassist Charles Mingus, who found the saxophonist's highly emotive style ideally suited to his alternately sweet and volatile music.
		Handy, who arranged all the selections, plays alto throughout, except on "Mood Indigo," where he picks up his first instrument, the clarinet, to offer a haunting tribute to the song's composer, Barney Bigard.

		Handy received a letter from a musician friend in August of 1896, inviting him to join a minstrel group called "Mahara's Minstrels." He saw this as a great opportunity even though minstrel groups (traveling bands that roamed from city to city) were not highly regarded.
		Handy and his new wife Elizabeth traveled to Chicago where Handy took the job with Mahara's Minstrels at a salary of $6 per week.
		"Memphis Blues" was such a huge success that Handy published it in 1912.

		Handy was one of the first to adapt Latin motifs into his music, inspired by a turn-of-the-century trip he made to Cuba as a member of the famous Mahara's Minstrel Men troupe.
		Edwina says "It's well-known that W.C. Handy was born eight years after Emancipation to two freed slaves and that as a young child 'he heard a French horn in the breast of a robin,' and that he codified the blues and gave that music respectability.
		Consider the fact that Handy's classic "St. Louis Blues" remains the most recorded song of the first half of the 2Oth Century, outdone only by the German "Silent Night." It should be noted also that Handy's "Memphis Blues," another oft-recorded standard, contains the first published jazz break in sheet music history.
