BBC - South East Wales - Hall of Fame - WH Davies - tramp poet and writer from Newport
William Henry Davies was born in lowly circumstances in Portland Street in the Pill district of Newport, the son of an iron-moulder who died when he was two years old.
Davies documented this period of his life in his acclaimed memoir Autobiography of a Super-Tramp although the book may be short on facts and long on embellishment.
Davies continued writing and an account of his marriage was eventually published in 1980 as Young Emma.

[minstrels] The Villain -- W.H. Davies
I was all the more delighted, therefore, by the beautiful and startlingly original image in the ending - not just for its own sake, but because I suddenly realised that the weakness of the opening lines was a deliberate parody of the style, an easy target that was subverted and skewered by the ending.
Of course, I should have been familiar enough with Davies' work to know right away that the tone of the first few lines was highly uncharacteristic, but every poet has the occasional bad poem - which is probably true of Davies too; still, it's nice to know this wasn't it .
From: "Ilza" Sorry but I beg to differ Davies did not live "the life of a reclusive" - on the contrary, he used to travel a lot.

William Henry Davies became a writer literally by accident.
Shaw was amazed to discover the author of these impressive verses - “like a draught of clear water in a desert”- was not a literary scholar but the resident of a south London doss house.
Born at Newport, then in Monmouthshire, Davies saw little appeal in life as an apprentice picture framer.

Adrian Williams secular vocal music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
The first London performance was given by James Meek (baritone), Sian Davies (oboe) and members of the Chamber Music Company, at the Purcell Room in April 1992.
Davies is recognised by many as the 'super-tramp' poet, and for writing the famous lines: 'what is life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?'
The composer was drawn to the simplicity and directness of Davies' poems, which struck a chord with his own leanings towards rural life and rejection of city and suburban values.
