West Australian Football League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike many other sporting competitions, the WAFL didn't go into recess during World War I, although two teams — North Fremantle and Midland Junction — were "casualties" of the war, competing for the last time in 1915 and 1917 respectively.
However, during this period more and more star WAFL players were looking to head to the Victorian Football League (VFL), enticed by the bigger money and the fact that it was more and more gaining a reputation as the "big" league.
Against a backdrop in which several WAFL clubs were looking to enter the VFL or in which a struggling Victorian club may be relocated to Perth, the WAFL decided to hastily form a new club to enter the VFL such that they could retain control of a West Australian presence in the situation.

During a write episode, WAFL allocates disk space for all the dirty data in the cache and schedules the required disk I/O. As a result, commonly modified blocks, such as indirect blocks and blocks in the inode file, are written only once per write episode instead of once per NFS request.
WAFL processes hundreds or thousands of NFS requests between consistency points, so the on-disk image of the file system remains the same for many seconds until WAFL writes a new consistency point, at which time the on-disk image advances atomically to a new state that reflects the changes made by the new requests.
WAFL caches inode data in two places: in a special cache of in-core inodes, and in disk buffers belonging to the inode file.

WAFL differs significantly from LFS, though, in that it does not have a cleaner.
The paper does not describe the allocation algorithm in detail, but WAFL does have a "block-map" file (unlike LFS, and different from FFS's block bitmap since it carries extra information about snapshots); having a cleaner would likely be incompatible with the consistently high performance required of an appliance.
WAFL uses this mechanism to keep checkpoints every few seconds so that the filesystem can be restored immediately after a crash.

WAFL's two most important meta-data files are the inode file (which contains all inodes) and the free block bitmap file.
WAFL has complete flexibility in its write allocation policies because no blocks are permanently assigned to fixed disk locations as they are in the Berkeley Fast File System (FFS).
The only exception to the write anywhere policy is that one inode (in WAFL's case the inode describing the inode file) must be written in a fixed location in order to enable the system to find everything else.

WAFL is a block-based file sytem that uses inodes to describe files.
A WAFL file system is organized as a tree of blocks, where the block containing the root inode must live at a fixed location on disk where WAFL can find it.
For write allocation, WAFL improves RAID performance by writing to multiple blocks in the same stripe, reduces seek time by writing blocks to locations that are near each other on disk, and reduces head-contention when erading large files by placing sequentail blocks in a file on a single disk in the RAID array.
