The company management was seeking a legally binding agreement at its new plant in Wapping, London, which would force the workers to accept flexible working, a no-strike clause, the adoption of new technology and the abandonment of the closed shop.
People in Wapping were largely viewed by the police as sympathetic to the strikers, and were frequently denied access to their streets and homes.

I used to work with an old fella who worked in the old wharf warehouses in Wapping many years ago, he told me there was once 30 pubs on and around the high street and they all were packed with dockers.
I visited Wapping for the first time today and was surprised to find the strangest London High Street I`ve ever visited, there were no shops just old warehouses that had been turned into homes for the well heeled, it was a little eerie and very quiet.
Not full of suits, which I was afraid of given it's in Wapping.

 The Execution of Pirates at Wapping
An important processional leading to a hanging was the execution of pirates on the banks of the Thames in the area known as Wapping.
After the hanging, the more notorious pirates were covered with tar and suspended on a gibbet or in irons along the Thames at Graves Point to warn sailors on ingoing and outgoing ships the price of mutiny and piracy.
Captain Kidd was the most famous pirate executed at Wapping but for reasons unknown to me, he was incarcerated at Newgate prison instead of the Marshalsea where pirates were usually held.
