WBEZ's plan, which doesn't take effect until next year, has sparked a backlash from public radio patrons in the nation's third-largest city, once the country's jazz and blues hub and still home to a thriving alternative music scene.

Tesser, who's technically on a leave of absence from WBEZ that began after the last Jazz Festival, and former WBEZ director of underwriting Tony Judge proposed a way to eliminate this competition by combining the best of both events into a package deal that would also be free via the satellite.
By contrast, in recent years WBEZ has waited until the last minute to agree to broadcast the festival, said one source who asked not to be identified, sometimes leaving only a few months to find underwriting and plan the whole production.
WBEZ general manager Torey Malatia said the package--frequent promotional spots, artist profiles, and other prefestival programs--represents a moderate increase over the one it provided last year.

Malatia was quoted as saying the report showed "what was pulling people in and not pulling them in" and changes were made based on audience trends.
WBEZ also has come under criticism for tape-delaying "Whad'Ya Know", which occurred before the recent changes but which has continued in order to allow "Wait, Wait" to have a time slot right after "Car Talk" [in my opinion, just about the worst thing on public radio ever] as a transition to "Whad'Ya Know".

 Staff Editorial
It seemed obvious that, if the WBEZ agreement were not to happen, the university would go searching for another party to foot the bill for the radio station — almost certainly a party that would have no interest whatsoever in preserving current WLUW programming and opportunities for volunteers.
The people we talked to from WBEZ made strong, reasonable arguments about how they could help us, spoke knowledgeably about our programming (and promised to preserve it) and demonstrated a good understanding of our situation.
I support the WBEZ- WLUW agreement because I believe it is the best option for the continued survival of WLUW as we know it — not out of any selfish interests.

These rumors, combined with university officials’ waffling on whether WBEZ was their "negotiating partner,” made the staff and volunteers afraid that the community, the fans, the hard work they’d invested in WLUW would be flushed away.
But Torey Malatia, the general manager of WBEZ, set their minds at ease by meeting in person with the staff and with Friends of WLUW, a community group that formed to voice their concerns and fight to keep the station from disappearing or changing.
