WBUR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WBUR is the largest of three NPR member stations in Boston, Massachusetts.
WBUR bills itself as "Boston's NPR news station." The station has, since 2004, been embroiled in several management scandals, the first of which resulted in the departure of the long time station manager.
WBUR is also the owner/operator of WBUR-AM, 1240 kHz in West Yarmouth, MA and the Rhode Island Public Radio Stations WRNI, 1290 kHz, in North Providence, RI and WXNI, 1310 kHz in Westerly, RI.

WBUR emanates from Boston University and began as a 400-watt campus station in 1950.
While most radio stations have all but abandoned news reporting, WBUR is the first non-commercial station to be named "News Station of the Year" by the Associated Press.
WBUR programs are available in the archive section just three minutes after the show ends.

 The Boston Radio Dial: WBUR-FM
WBUR began its broadcast career on March 1, 1950, one of many small noncommercial FMs appearing at colleges, universities, and even high schools in the years after World War II.
WBUR's first home was at 84 Exeter Street in downtown Boston, with a 400-watt transmitter operating from the top of the building.
When WBUR moved to its new studios in 1996, WTBU was able to move out of its old facility in a basement on Bay State Road and into the former WBUR location at 630 Commonwealth Avenue.

But in a message posted yesterday on the WBUR Web site, she said, ''We made two generous proposals to `The Connection' host and senior producer, which they chose to turn down.

Current Online | WBUR's Jane Christo
Under Christo's leadership--and her faith in NPR programming long before it was a sure thing--WBUR has grown from 60,000 listeners in 1979 to 400,000 to date--the fifth-largest public radio audience in the country.
Christo came to WBUR as development director in 1974, leaving behind a career as an account executive for an advertising agency.
Ask to comment on Giovannoni's assessment of WBUR as a bellwether station, Creagh replied, "David's judgments tend to be related to the size and caliber of the audience.

Current Online | WBUR struggles with Connection host, 2001
Program staff and WBUR management agree on at least one thing: the ball is in the other's court.
"WBUR feels that this proposal is incompatible with the station's mandate as a nonprofit institution and incompatible with our reliance on individual contributions for more than half our financial support," the station said in a statement.
Christo has a reputation for being gutsy, driven and focused, qualities which helped her build WBUR into what it is today.

North East RadioWatch: March 5, 2001
WBUR management, perhaps envious of the fortunes earned by the station's other signature show ("Car Talk," which is owned by hosts Tom and Ray Magliozzi), balked at the demand -- in the process revealing to the media that Lydon had been offered a raise to nearly $300,000 a year, and McGrath nearly half that.
Most of the show's staff quit WBUR last week, followed on Thursday by conflicting statements from the station and from Lydon, both amounting to the same message: Lydon and McGrath won't be returning to WBUR.
WBUR, by contrast, will be offering something called "The Connection" with an untried host and without the staff that booked the guests, screened the calls and kept the conversation going on-line.

groggenspiel: Ah, WBUR, I hardly knew thee
While some of you may pine for the days of Christopher Lydon (whose bluff WBUR called after he did the broadcast equivalent of "if you don't play by my rules I'll take my toys and go home"), I really think Dick Gordon made the show his own.
WBUR, like any other public radio station, spends a good portion of its time pimping itself out to get listener contributions, often resorting to inhumane means such as long, guilt trip-laden tirades from Ira Glass.
It's high time WBUR let the rest of the world in on its best kept secret, and make some money selling it in the process.
