WCBS-FM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WCBS-FM is a New York City radio station, broadcasting on 101.1 MHz FM, which was famous for playing oldies music before flipping to the Jack FM format abruptly in early June 2005.
In the overall summer 2005 ratings period, the station had a 1.5 rating 12+, which was the lowest of any commercial FM station in New York.
Some believe that this was a way to cater to younger demographics, since the average age of an oldies station listener these days is considered "undesirable" to advertisers (though WCBS was skewing slightly younger than oldies stations in other markets due to having more 70s and 80s songs in its rotation).

Jack FM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the same day that WCBS-FM made the switch, 104.3 WJMK, an oldies station in Chicago, Illinois, changed format to 104.3 Jack FM as well.
One of the main criticisms of the Jack FM format has been that with the elimination (or at least reduction) of the role of the DJ, radio is losing its main selling point over an iPod, which is the sense that a live person is programming your music.
The majority of the Jack FM stations in the United States are owned by Infinity Broadcasting.

FM (and AM) radio stations are so out of touch with how a radio station should be that it makes me even more happy that XM exists.
In this day of Clear Channel and contant repetition all of the once-good FM channels are either changing their format or have gotten worse in quality.
In New York, that balancing act is compounded by the launch of the new "Mix" format at sister station WNEW-FM (102.7 FM).

Idle Mendacity: WCBS-FM doesn't know JACK
That, analysts said, is essentially what drove WCBS owner Infinity Broadcasting on Friday to abruptly switch from playing oldies -- which it had done for 33 years -- to the trendy "Jack" format, a mix of rock and pop from the 1970s to today.
Moreover, while WCBS may not have earned as much as in past years, it still was the 10th-rated station in the competitive New York market.
Which is basically the same thing as many other FM stations these days (this "hole in the market" business is malarkey).

It was especially important because as other “oldies” stations started up in the market, and beat the same two dozen songs into the ground mercilessly, WCBS was always there, like an oasis in the desert playing something interesting.
As time wore on, and other New York radio giants fell to market research and changing times, WCBS was always there.
I was ten years old, and in the beginning, all I knew of the station was it’s humorous TV commercials.
