Malenko had given up the title shortly after winning it after Jericho protested, claiming he never signed a contract to wrestle Malenko at Slamboree (controversy stemming from the battle royal/mask thing).
This was a phantom title change, as Lenny was taken off TV because his character was too controversial.
As part of Bischoff and Russo taking over the booking for WCW, this title was vacated on April 10, 2000, and a way to determine the new champ was chosen - a "six-way suicide" match.

My guess is no, leading me to believe that the Cruiserweight Title would be abandoned or there would be a unification match in the future-- in which the Cruiserweight Title belt would eventually-- again-- be forgotten about.
i love how "Tie-jery" is the WWF cruiserweight champ when you can see the WCW logo's on the belt...whenever x-pac gets over his like 6th neck injury, i'd love to see a 4 or 6 man elimination match for unifying the belts...
The most entertaining part of the cruiserweight division is JR putting himself over in his report acting as if he is the Cruiserweight saviour that is held back by the Evil Heavyweights.

The end came when the ref was out of it, and Charles Robinson slipped on a referee shirt; Ric Flair nailed Malenko with the US title belt, and David got the pin.
The ironic thing is, when the belt touched Malenko's head, that's the closest it's come in almost two years to being around the waist of a deserving champion.
