The WDC 65816 (also: 65C816), a 16-bit microprocessor CPU developed by the Western Design Center (WDC), is an expanded and compatible successor to the venerable MOS Technology 6502.
As of 2006 it is still sold by WDC, and the architecture has also been implemented as an IP core in some systems, such as Winbond's W55V9x series of TV Edutainment ICs.
The 65802 was produced by WDC and GTE during the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s.

There has been only one major redesign of the '816 from 1986 to present, and that is the '816S that is generally known to WDC fans as the "14MHz" chip.
In order to guarantee being able to run at a higher speed, WDC has to test the chip, which is where cost is going to be incurred.

The bit manipulation instructions found only on the Rockwell and WDC versions of the 65C02 are not included in the table, nor are the "undocumented" instructions of the original 6502.
The bit set and clear instructions have the form xyyy0111, where x is 0 to clear a bit or 1 to set it, and yyy is which bit at the memory location to set or clear.
Similarly, the test-and-branch instructions are of the form xyyy1111, where x is 0 to test whether the bit is 0, or 1 to test whether it is 1, and yyy is which bit to test.

It was Mensch who spearheaded a re-creation of the 6502 processor into the lower-powered 65c02, which included the additional assembly language opcodes that made it possible to "crunch" the ROM code in the Apple IIc small enough to fit in its additional built-in functions without excessively complicating the design or coding.
In 1983, WDC extended the architecture of the 65C02 to 16 bits with the 65C816, which was used in the Apple IIgs.
The 65C816 is at the heart of the Super Nintendo, and Franklin Electronic Publishing uses the 65C02 in its Language Translator and the 65C816 in its Digital Book System.
