Topic: WEVD

  WEVD New York, NY
The WEVD call letters were derived from the initials of Socialist Party founder Eugene V. Debs.
WEVD moved to the AM dial on 1050 (with a Talk/Brokered format), while Spanish Broadcasting moved its Spanish music format to the FM dial (where it remains to this day).
For the first time in more than 75 years, the WEVD call letters were gone from the New York City airwaves.

WEVD, whose call letters represented the initials of Eugene V. Debs, was founded in 1927 as a memorial to the Socialist leader by a group that included members of The Forward Association.
Disney had an option to buy WEVD since it began paying to put ESPN sports on the station last year, replacing a talk lineup featuring Bill Mazer and former Mayor Ed Koch.
The association previously was paid $32.5 million by the Spanish Broadcasting System to move WEVD from 97.9 FM to 1050 AM - part of a complex shuffle in 1988 that also bumped all-sports WFAN from 1050 AM to its current 660 AM.

The WEVD that appeared on 1050 in 1988 was not a continuation of the 1330 WEVD.
SBS's plan was to swap the 1050 signal for WEVD's 97.9 FM (with WEVD getting some cash in the deal as well), but for a few months until that end of the deal could be consummated, SBS was permitted to operate 1050 as WUKQ with a Spanish format.

But if WEVD isn’t a hate-fest like WABC and WOR (though New York’s Palestinian community might want to weigh in on that), it harbored no compunctions about selling airtime to a viciously racist wildebeest like Beth Gilinsky of the Jewish Action Alliance, aka the Jewish Asshole Alliance.
