WFNX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WFNX is also simulcast on two other New England radio frequencies: 92.1FM WFEX in Manchester, New Hampshire and 92.1FM WPHX in Portland, Maine.
WFNX is owned by publisher Stephen M. Mindich's company the Phoenix Media/Communications Group and promoted as the broadcast cousin of the Boston Phoenix, Mindich's long-running alternative media news magazine.
WFNX has now doubled its power and was given permission by the FCC to begin broadcasting from its new tower located on the top of One Financial Center in downtown Boston.

 Consumer Decision Making Process
The initial mission of WFNX was to serve as a link to the newspaper, appealing to the same audience: educated, affluent, single professionals and students seeking different opinions from those offered by mainstream media.
WFNX was cited as an avatar of this trend.
WFNX identified with its smaller share, taking it as a sign that it was in touch with its progressive audience.

 Wired News:
Agent Audio's founder, Randy Thomae, said the software is intended to strengthen the relationship between radio stations and their listeners by creating a constant feedback loop.
And that loop provides WFNX program directors and schedulers - who must decide which new songs will get airplay and which older songs are burned out - with a deep database of information about listener preferences.
WFNX doesn't do regular call-outs, but some of its larger competitors do.

It seems obvious that the MDC decision was not based on facts, Representative Paul Demakis, who was instrumental in pressuring the MDC into banning the concerts, has said that he has no notion of which of the new bands he found problematic.
This cancellation of the WFNX shows has nothing to do with the size of the crowds expected, nor the "heavy use" of the Esplanade facilities.

 Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Living / Arts / Comic's career spins in a new direction
WFNX started moving in a new direction six months ago, going away from what general manager Andy Kingston calls "aggressive-leaning" rock music toward the station's original alternative sound.
Though Kenny Z had been with WFNX for almost three years -- first writing bits for the morning show for free, then coming aboard as a producer more than a year ago -- he hadn't expected the prime slot just yet.
So far, it's a grab bag; it includes stunts like "Fakin' the Band," which auditions listeners for an official WFNX morning-show band, the final lineup of which will be decided at a showdown at the end of the month.

Before long Chris was squeezing in as many shifts as possible at the college station, interning for the morning show at WFNX and working for WHAV-AM in Haverhill after school.
It was not unheard of for young Chris to begin his morning internship at 6 am, perform an air shift at his college station in between classes and end his night working in Haverhill at 2 am.
Chris graduated from Salem State with a degree in English and landed a job as WFNX's Copywriter where he helped develop the successful on-air launch of the WFNX Ski Team - a promotional tool that is still flourishing for the station.

Alternative music station WFNX 101.7 recently launched FNX Interactive, a Java-based application that lets listeners not only find out what song is being broadcast on the radio but also provide feedback in the form of ratings and comments on what's being played.
The ratings, which are fed into a database and can be matched against demographic information that listeners supply when they register on the site, could give the station a valuable new market research tool, officials say.
At the WFNX site, listeners can see which disc jockey is on the air and what song the DJ is playing, including name of the artist and CD.
