Prague 1968: the Last, late short spring of the WFTU
In 1989 - because of 1989 - the WFTU was reduced to a ghost of its former spectre.
The WFTU occupied some three floors of a massive former hotel, on a square named after Marie Curie, on the banks of the Vltava, directly opposite the steep bank on which there had once stood the world’s largest statue of Stalin.
The WFTU Secretariat voted, with one opposed (Russian), a condemnation of the Soviet invasion.

The WFTU position on these matters is quite clear that neo-liberal capitalist globalisation must be confronted and defeated and that the international trade union movement must unite, irrespective of ideological and organisational outlooks and affiliations, to act together with all other democratic forces striving for peace, development, justice and social progress.
The WFTU's recognition of this and the efforts by member bodies and Trade Union Internationals (TUIs) to build that unity are to be admired and of course encouraged.
Twenty-one unions from around the world applied for and were accepted as members of the WFTU at the Congress, signalling that WFTU membership is steadily growing and that an international trade union organisation basing itself on class struggle and socialism is far from irrelevant in today's economic and political climate.

The history of the international labour movement, and in particular the post-war period, the establishment of the WFTU and its split, the emergence of the ICFTU, is well documented.
The role of the CIA has often been overestimated both by its supporters and its enemies, and it is significant to note that when its hold on parts of the labour movement was finally broken, communist trade unionists had nothing to do with it.
The true function of the WFTU became apparent after the split, when it became one of a number of Soviet-controlled international organisations, which constituted the political bodyguards of Soviet foreign policy in civil society (unions, but also youth, students, women, the peace movement, lawyers, academics and scientists, etc.).

World Federation of Trade Unions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) was established in the wake of the Second World War to bring together trade unions across the world in a single international organization, much like the United Nations.
After a number of Western trade unions left it in 1949, as a result of disputes over support for the Marshall Plan, to form the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, the WFTU was made up primarily of state-run unions from communist countries and unions affiliated with or sympathetic to communist parties elsewhere.
The WFTU has declined precipitously in the past twenty years since the fall of the communist regimes in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, with many of its former constituent unions joining the ICFTU.
