New York Daily News - Entertainment - Radio: New life on WFUV suits Elsas just fine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The place they held that event, the Bottom Line, is now gone, and some say the kind of radio WNEW used to do is also gone, except for some smaller college stations and satellite radio channels.
WFUV plays artists from Hank Williams and Howlin' Wolf up through the Decembrists, Elsas notes.
Being non-commercial also gives WFUV a more relaxed feeling, and that's reflected in interviews like the one Elsas conducted with Mellencamp, who talks about his career and explains why, for instance, he identifies with Hoagy Carmichael.

Current.org | NTIA chief reverses WFUV ruling, 1996
Managers of the 250-acre New York Botanical Garden were horrified to find WFUV's new tower rising near their elegant Victorian greenhouse, and got the city to halt construction on the tower in July 1994, when it had reached only 260 feet of its planned 480-foot height.
The new tower would put WFUV's antenna at about 500 feet, compared to its present height of 190 feet, which he says is low for a tower in a big city.
WFUV wins legal battles against the neighboring botanical garden, but by 2002 it's looking for a new tower site, and a new site is announced in 2004.

Current.org | WFUV again seeking new tower site, 2002
After eight years of legal struggles with the botanical garden, WFUV hangs its antenna from a tower that, despite being cut short by halted construction, offends the garden's management.
The site would be rare, Jennings says, because WFUV has looked at 30 sites in addition to the Fordham campus and found no affordable land where the signal would abide by FCC interference rules while avoiding hostile neighbors and LaGuardia Airport flight paths.
WFUV fans at the FCC forums wore T-shirts emblazoned "No tower, no tunes," but Lauby says the station need not go off the air to get its tower out of sight.

That's one of the prices radio personalities may pay these days for doing what used to be called free-form radio - where the music isn't limited to a narrow, station-selected playlist.

Current.org | PTFP reviews policy in WFUV case, 1992
Harland confirmed that WFUV's situation had prompted a policy review, but said that the process had been suspended when the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), PTFP's parent agency, learned that a related case is currently pending before the Supreme Court, and ''might very well have a bearing'' on the policy.
WFUV asked PTFP for about $250,000 to upgrade its broadcast tower and about $45,000 to refurbish the studio control room.
Jennings said that WFUV had been further encouraged to apply when it learned indirectly that Ken Salomon, a former NTIA official who had drafted the policy governing sectarian programming in 1978, believes that it is being applied too literally and somewhat arbitrarily.
