WGA screenwriting credit system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The system is seen as important to writers primarily for reputational purposes.
The WGA refused, however, because "it 'diminished the value' of the show and basically made light of the studio" said Straczynski.
Legally Blonde 2 (2003) gives credit to Amanda Brown for creating the characters as she wrote the novel the first film was based upon.

 screenwriting
Despite the fact that a screenwriter is often the genesis of a project, director — not writers — frequently get their names associated with the films they make (as in, "a film by...").
Recently, the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the labor union representing writers in the American film and television industries, has made great efforts to limit the use of the "a film by" title in the credits of motion pictures, to preserve the respect for level of input made by the writers.
Screenwriter William Goldman is widely quoted as saying "Screenplays are structure." The first, most basic theory of screenwriting is Aristotle's Poetics, which explains the Three Act Structure.

Credits Forum: Opinions - Writers Guild of America, East, AFL-CIO, WGAE, WGA East, Movie Scripts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-22)
In fact, I would propose a "Created By" credit for the author of an original screenplay, except that would only serve to enrage the DGA and we have enough problems with them over credit as it is. Now I recognize that this only addresses the issue of original screenplays, not adaptations.
The current credit guidelines should be retained and strengthened with the clear language (taken out surreptitiously in the last credit referendum) of the TV credits manual for what constitutes the writing of a script.
This system would be much easier to live with, when one is secure in the fact that these arbiters are pros, and would not be swayed by some well wrought letter, as they are now.

Closing credits - Free net encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-22)
Closing credits, in a television program or motion picture, come at the end of a show and list all the cast and crew involved in the production.
On some shows, the credits are reduced to either a rapid-fire crawl, or quick-flashing cards; either way, each credit would appear on-screen for less than one second.
The use of closing credits in film to list complete production crew and cast was not firmly established in American film until the 1960s.

Writers Guild of America - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-22)
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is the collective bargaining representative, or labor union, for writers in the motion picture and television industries in the United States.
In addition to establishing minimum employment standards for its members, the WGA is the final arbiter of screenwriting credit for film and television programs made under its jurisdiction.
For historical reasons, the WGA is divided into two separate unions, the Writers Guild of America, east and Writers Guild of America, west.

Currently in American movies, screenwriters are listed in the opening credits, with the wording "Written by," "Screenplay by." or "Story by." (Check here for what these terms mean.) These screen credits are meant to denote the "author" of the script.
Under the current system, a writer who's spent several months working on a given film may find her name is nowhere on the final product.
Whatever the title of the credit is, as long as someone worked on the movie in some fashion and was paid for it, they should be in the credits.

 The Artful Writer: Credits Archives
From the WGA’s point of view, they must consider the non-sig script to be source material, because its ability to assign screenplay credit is entirely a function of its collective bargaining agreement, and the non-sig script doesn’t fall under that.
While the architects of the WGA credits guidelines may have been motivated by prosocial concerns or dramaturgical theory, it’s always safest to assume that the participants in arbitrations will be motivated by self-interest.
Reach a separate agreement on credits with the other participating writers, which then becomes the final credits for the film (as long as the credits are MBA legal).

The administration of an accurate and equitable system of determining credits is therefore one of the most important services the Guild performs for writers, and it is to a better understanding of this important responsibility that this Manual is dedicated.
The guiding principle of this system of credit determination is that the writing credits should be a true and accurate statement of authorship as determined by the rules of this Manual.
Fortunately, the written material provides a definite basis for credit determination, and the willingness of experienced writers to read this material carefully and weigh the contributions of the participants ensures a fair and impartial decision arrived at by qualified persons.
