WGBH - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WGBH-TV Channel 2 went on the air on May 2, 1955, at 5:20pm with studios located at 84 Massachusetts Avenue until a fire destroyed the studios in the early morning hours of October 14, 1961.
WGBH received its first broadcasting license in 1951 under the auspices of the Lowell Institute Cooperative Broadcasting Council, a consortium of local universities and cultural institutions, whose collaboration stems from an 1836 bequest by textile manufacturer John Lowell, Jr.
WGBH's original studios were located in building W20 (presently Stratton Student Center) on the campus of MIT until the building burned down in a 1963 fire.

 312-3.txt
WGBH violated Section 8(a)(1) and (5) of the Act by unilaterally changing the terms and conditions of employment of its writers by implementing a new wage schedule for its writers on the Annenberg supported State of the World program, at a time when there was no impasse in the negotiations between the parties.
WGBH is alleging that an impasse existed on August 15 because they hadn't yet reached an agreement with the Union and they had to begin writing services on State of the World on that date.
WGBH violated Section 8(a)(1) and (5) of the Act by failing to provide the Union with information it had requested since about July 8, 1988, regarding compensation of hyphenates who were its members.

Cable TV Talk - WGBH Series Breaks Commercial Barrier
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - WGBH-TV, one of PBS' leading programming creators, isn't necessarily going Hollywood, but just this once, the Boston-based station is going where the money is. After offering ''Peep and the Big Wide World," a science show for kids, to PBS, WGBH decided to take the show to TLC and Discovery Kids.
WGBH pitched " Peep" to PBS two years ago, but was told that there simply wasn't room in the schedule for another program aimed at a preschool demographic.
WGBH's only other contribution to commercial television was the 1995 documentary " Driving Passion," which aired on TBS.

WGBH was the key station of the Eastern Educational Network, an early interconnection of the first few educational radio stations in the region.
WGBH's best-known program through the seventies, eighties, and most of the nineties was Robert J. Lurtsema's “Morning pro musica”, heard at its height on a network that extended from Maine to Albany.

 2003 Excellence Awards
It is likely in the near future WGBH will be adding more services on this link, including both real-time and non-real-time video transfer.
Two Tandberg E5720 encoders and two TT1260 decoders are installed at both the WGBH and WGBY master controls, making it possible to send two program streams in each direction simultaneously.
A digital upgrade was run on the existing microwave link because the link was already in full service with towers, dishes, RF plumbing, shelter space, etc. There would be a one-time-only cost to purchase and install the new equipment.

 WGBH White Paper
Public TV has an unprecedented success: telephone calls go unanswered, social engagements are rescheduled and life is generally disrupted throughout the country.
WGBH programs win six Ohio State Awards, more than any other station or network in the U.S. October 14: A fire in the early morning at 84 Massachusetts Avenue completely destroys WGBH facilities.
WGBH broadcasts the entire show, and then immediately begins showing it again on video tape, staying on the air until 1:45 am.

 Don't Quote Me
Emily Rooney is taping the intro to a segment of WGBH-TV's new local public-affairs show, Greater Boston.
Public TV rarely risks anything innovative in news and public affairs; its only nightly news show, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, is a tired, inside-the-Beltway smorgasbord of talking heads.
And WGBH, despite a tradition as the "Tiffany" station in the Public Broadcasting System, is no exception.

The Change Mariner: WGBH-TV Rolls Out Digital Asset System to Position for Convergence
The new center will change the way WGBH uses and reuses content for its various businesses, including the Web, home videos, DVDs, education outreach and books, as well as TV.
WGBH and lead technology partner Sun Microsystems also intend to allow other broadcasters and content companies to kick the tires at the so-called "iforce center" and take the technology for a test drive before buying.
The multimillion-dollar facility is also critical to the future of WGBH because it will allow the station to "morph into a digital library" and share resources across its many different businesses, said David Liroff, VP and chief technology officer at WGBH.

Free Press News : WGBH to deliver Postcards on time
WGBH would just as soon have avoided the controversy, since the basic plotline is about colleccting maple syrup, and the lesbian copule led family unit is just one of many different types Buster visits, including fundamentalist Christians, Muslims and Mormons.
It argues the show is just as true to its mission of showing diverse, real, families, as any of the other episodes it has aired.
Some are even giving it a prime time airing, with an accompanying discussion of the issues raised.

 WGBH-TV/WGBX-TV Sign-off(s)
Since both WGBH and WGBX are now 24 hours a day, the mission statement is rarely heard anymore.
Channel 44 was the poor step-child of WGBH for many years.
Pierce would give a brief history of the station and would eventually read the names of the Lowell Institute members with a harpsichord selection as the musical background with a colorful calydoscope of lights with the Lowell Institute logo inside of the lights.

 The Boston TV Dial: WGBH-TV
WGBH-TV transmits on analog channel 2 from the Viacom tower in Needham, using 72.4 kW peak visual ERP, from an antenna 335 meters (1099 ft) above average terrain, using horizontal polarization.
(The WGBH call letters do not stand for “God Bless Harvard”, but rather “Great Blue Hill”, the station's original transmitter location.) WGBH was instrumental in founding the Eastern Educational Network in the 1950s, providing program-sharing services among the fledgling noncommercial stations in the East.
With the formation of the Public Broadcasting Service in the late 1960s, WGBH became one of a handful of key originating stations, providing programs such as “Nova”, “Zoom”, and “Masterpiece Theatre” to the national network.

A selection from a decade of visits to tower and studio sites in the Northeast and beyond
WGBH's building is relatively empty these days; the space that once housed big tube transmitters for both Channel 2 and Channel 44 now houses only a solid-state Harris transmitter for Channel 2 (you can see it in the background in this photo).
At left in this picture is some basic switching and character-generator gear that will allow WGBH and WGBX to stay on the air even in the event of a total loss of their Allston studios, as long as a PBS satellite signal can be downlinked.
Each broadcaster at this site built its own transmitter building; WGBH's is the first one you see as you drive up the private road from Cedar Street (in fact, it's the only one easily visible from the security gate.

Viacom tower, 350 Cedar St., Needham
When the tower was reconstructed for digital TV, another 300 feet of 7-foot-face mast were added at the top, crowned by a pair of new broadband UHF antennas.
Since the reconstruction and heightening for digital TV, there is no longer any radio on what is now the Viacom tower, although there has been considerable discussion of putting up a master FM antenna below the TV antennas.
