SLAX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WHAX, a name derived from 'Whitehat' and 'SLAX', was a distribution designed for security tasks.
WHAX emerged from Whoppix, a Knoppix-based security distro.
WHAX made it possible to test and verify the security of a network from many computers located in various places.

Whax used to be called Whoppix, and was based on Knoppix, the popular live CD Linux system which is used for many other tools, including forensic toolkits.
Whax boots into a graphical KDE environment, but until recently, the system used the lightweight XFCE, which some might prefer because it is definitely faster than KDE.
However, Whax and Auditor (another pen-test live CD) are set to merge this year under the name BackTrack, and this relative lack of information might be simply an early sign of preparation for this.

Whax isn't long out of beta stage, but there are already plenty of reviews popping up.
Whax and Whoppix are both designed with penetration-testing in mind; penetration-testing is testing a computer or a network for penetrable vulnerabilities, that is to test the security of a computer or a network of computers.
Slax (and therefore Whax) uses.mo modules, which are simply placed in a directory on the cd and detected during startup.

Whax can be run on VMware from an ISO on the desktop.
The elusive setting that initially stopped this Whax from working on VMware was the "acceleration" feature that is turned on by default on some versions of VMware.
