WLFM’s exit from the airwaves marks the end of an era that began in 1956, when the station debuted as the Fox Valley’s first FM outpost, according to Lawrence’s Web site.
WLFM’s outdated radio equipment, some of which is almost as old as the station itself, will be carted away, leaving more room for on-air community roundtables, radio dramas and live music performances.
When WLFM announced in June that it was going off the air, “a lot of people were taken by surprise by the decision and really against it,” Hanson-Dvoracek said.

Lawrentian Articles About Trivia Weekend '66-'76
As WLFM's Master of Trivia, J. DeRosset once said, "The mind of every human being is a virtually untapped source of trivial knowledge." WLFM is once again striving to prove this true when on May 3-5 (Encampment weekend) the student owned and operated FM station will spend fifty hours asking the most trivial of questions.
It was expanded to the greater Appleton are on WLFM in 1967.
For one thing, the evil geniuses at WLFM who plan this craziness each year got on the shtick a little sooner, and, with the experienced guidance of incumbent Trivia Master Tony Welhouse and the constant goading General Manager Eric Buchter, trivia was brought forth in the Second Term of the year.

In many ways, WLFM is like any other local music radio station, complete with enthusiastic, knowledgeable DJs and plenty of fresh music.

WLFM provided one of the only ways for Lawrence to reach out into the community in a positive way.
WLFM could have dealt with any future equipment failure by purchasing low-cost used equipment on web sites like eBay and craigslist, as most college stations with limited budgets do.
The Reaction to Shutdown of WLFM's FM Broadcast Petition to President Jill Beck, Dean of Campus Activities Paul Shrode, and the Lawrence University Administration was created by and written by James M. Daley (daleyj@umich.edu).

Sadly, it hasn’t been quite as contageously fun as it was in the early 90’s since.
With Lawrence’s recent sale of their FCC broadcast license and equipment to the Starboard Media Foundation, effectively turning WLFM into a webcast-only “station,” I fear the great tradition will soon be gone.

He noted that the online version of WLFM offers individuals outside of the traditional broadcast range the only opportunity to listen and that currently many people do just that.
