 WLW Radio, Cincinnati
Why was WLW the first and only station to operate with "superpower?" The story of this one station "network" starts with a frustrated automobile manufacturer, Powel Crosley, Jr., and a request from his son.
Crosley led WLW to seek an increase to 500 watts in 1923; 1,000 watts in 1924.
It was said WLW's 831 foot, 200 ton tower was specially built with a "fat" middle to handle the RF current received, 72 amperes carrier current via a feedline of almost 10 inches diameter.

WLW was originally the extended shadow of Powel Crosley, Jr., yet another of those forgotten, 20th century visionaries.
In 1928, WLW was the first U.S. station to make it to 50 kW, courtesy of an enormous, water-cooled, Western Electric transmitter, the kind with those huge, Frankenstein-ish meters on top and plenty of ominous little windows where one could look in and see how hot the tubes were getting.
WLW might not be able to call itself the world's largest AM station anymore, but it could sure advertise that it was the cleanest.

If WLW could grow from 500 watts to 5000 to 50,000 in just six years, Crosley reasoned, the next logical step was 500,000 watts, and that's just what Crosley was granted on an experimental basis in 1934.
When WLW went to superpower operation, it needed a better antenna than the longwire, and so an order was placed with Pittsburgh's Blaw-Knox for an 831-foot diamond-shaped tower, one of the first vertical radiators used in the U.S. It weighed 136 tons and, I'm told, cost $46,243 to build.
