WMAP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The science goals of the WMAP broadly dictate that the relative CMB temperature be measured accurately over the full sky with high angular resolution and sensitivity.
The specific goal of WMAP is to map the relative CMB temperature over the full sky with an angular resolution of at least 0.3°, a sensitivity of 20 µK per 0.3° square pixel, with systematic artifacts limited to 5 µK per pixel.
WMAP scans the sky in such a way as to cover ~30% of the sky each day and as the L2 point follows the Earth around the Sun WMAP observes the full sky every six months.

 WMAP Status: Overview
WMAP is the first mission to use an L2 orbit as its permanent observing station.

First year results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP)
WMAP was created with the aim of extending on previous observations in two main ways: to make a map of the full sky, and to measure the CMB with much improved precision by minimizing systematic errors.
WMAP is a critical test of these models, and finds them in good agreement with the data.
In addition to this WMAP also finds that the fluctuations are entirely consistent with Gaussianity, and have placed the tightest constraints yet on the level of non-Gaussianity within the primordial spectrum.

WMAP was supposed to report the results from the analysis of the second year's worth of satellite data early this year, but this has been delayed quite a bit already, and evidently is being delayed even more.
The WMAP team is still struggling to determine whether the anomalies are real or merely the result of errors in the data analysis, and in the meantime they have not released the second-year data.
WMAP team member Hinshaw says the first sky maps of polarisation may be completed in a matter of weeks.

NASA's WMAP mission observes the universe as it was 380,000 years after the Big Bang, and is making a detailed investigation of the sky's cosmic microwave background — the radiant heat left over from the Big Bang — to help us understand the structure of the universe.
WMAP has provided insights into the amount of mysterious dark matter in the universe; many scientists had believed dark matter makes up 90 percent or more of the universe.
WMAP reveals the universe is 13.7 billion years old, with an uncertainty of only 200 million years.

IEEEVM: The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP)
WMAP is more sensitive than COBE and, therefore, will map the CMB with greater sensitivity and higher resolution.
A major goal of the science of cosmology (the study of the nature of the universe) is to determine the statistical properties of the universe.
The most prominent feature of WMAP is a pair of back-to-back telescopes that focus the microwave radiation from two spots on the sky roughly 140° apart and feed it to 10 separate differential receivers that sit in an assembly directly underneath the optics.

Mapping of cosmos backs Big Bang theory / Birth of time revealed in world according to WMAP
By analyzing the ripples, scientists have concluded the cosmos is 13.7 billion years old; that it will expand forever until it dissipates like a cloud; that it consists mostly of mysterious "dark matter" and "dark energy," and that the first stars began forming much sooner than originally thought.
NASA called the achievement by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, or WMAP, "one of the most important scientific results of recent years." Its data "lay the foundation for a unified and coherent cosmic theory," said WMAP principal investigator Charles Bennett at the press conference.

WMAP will "map" slight temperature fluctuations within the microwave background that vary by only 0.00001° C across a chilly light that now averages 2.73° C above absolute zero.
So WMAP is a cosmologist's dream come true, supplying the long-sought data needed to test the crazy theories we have of how it all began and how we got from there to here.

Max Tegmark's cosmology library: WMAP foregrounds
We perform an independent foreground analysis of the WMAP maps to produce a cleaned CMB map (available below), useful for cross-correlation with, e.g., galaxy and X-ray maps.
We use a variant of the Tegmark & Efstathiou (1996) technique that is completely blind, making no assumptions about the CMB power spectrum, the foregrounds, WMAP detector noise or external templates.
Compared with the foreground-cleaned internal linear combination map produced by the WMAP team, our map has the advantage of containing less non-CMB power (from foregrounds and detector noise) outside the Galactic plane.

In the first release of WMAP data, only the temperature data and analyses were released.
