Safety Review of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)
As WMATA implemented a number of questionable policies in the months prior to the January 1996 accident, there was no countervailing force at work in the agency to question these policies and subject them to a proper and disciplined analysis.
WMATA facilities, including the headquarters, are noticeably bare of safety awareness posters or other messages; the safety awards program for employees has been dismantled; and safety-related articles in employee publications are infrequent.
WMATA personnel interviewed acknowledged that station overruns under automatic train operation (ATO) were a problem, which they characterized as a "passenger inconvenience." Universally, they confidently expressed their assurance that overruns were not a safety issue.

 Souders David Monro v. WMATA
WMATA is an instrumentality of Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia created by interstate compact, 2 which enjoys sovereign immunity except where it has consented to suit.
WMATA would thus be subject to the different noise ceilings applicable in different localities; indeed, different juries within the same area might find that a particular noise level is a nuisance in one case but is not in another.
We observed that WMATA "h[ad] not sought to refute the claim" that its design required such beams, and therefore reversed the district court's grant of summary judgment in favor of WMATA because a genuine issue of fact existed as to whether the alleged nuisance resulted from a governmental ("design") or proprietary ("implementation") function.

 WMATA Red Line
WMATA commissioned a feasibility study for Metrorail's 84th station, New York Avenue in 1999, following requests by local residents and interest by the District of Columbia in revitalizing a part of its urban core.
WMATA expects 6,600 patrons to use this station within a year of its opening.
An assurance by WMATA that such access would be available in 1977 allowed the station to open shortly after the initial system opening.

McGraw-Hill Construction Design-Build -Metrorail Projects Racing To Find Uncertain Future
WMATA awarded a $217-million contract to a joint venture team comprised of Lane, Slattery Skanska and Granite Construction Co., Watsonville, Calif. The Largo extension will connect the Blue Line Metrorail from the existing Addison Road Station to Largo Town Center in Prince George’s County, Md.
To veteran WMATA contractors like Lane and Clark, the difference created by the design-build relationship on the Largo projects is a revelation.
WMATA also recently awarded The Haskell Company a $12.2- million design-build contract for a 1,200-space parking garage at its West Falls Church, Va., Metro station.

 Washington, Donald v. WMATA
Without reaching the sovereign immunity issue, the District Court granted WMATA's motion, concluding that Washington's claim was untimely, and that equitable tolling was not appropriate.
WMATA, however, is not an "agency" within the meaning of this provision.
Washington next argues that, even if he did not satisfy the filing requirement, the time for filing should be equitably tolled on the ground that WMATA touted its internal proce- dure as the appropriate forum for resolving discrimination complaints, see Brief of Appellant at 10, 15, and thereby "lulled [him]...

WMATA does not directly argue, and the panel majority did not hold, that medium or heavy lifting (heavy labor) could not constitute a class of jobs.
Washington, D.C. Although plaintiff's doctor testified that the 20 pound restriction was an approximate restriction, and that he could possibly lift between 20 and 30 pounds (see J.A. 251-252), as a general matter the parties (and the panel) have characterized this case as involving a 20 pound lifting restriction.
WMATA did not raise this issue in its initial briefs filed with this Court, and the panel did not address it.

WMATA: The Last Straw | archives | how now, brownpau?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
The day before that, negligence from WMATA employees caused a station to flood.
Add to this the past few weeks of Red Line funk, the post-Redskin game scheduling snafu, the racist station manager, the mysterious train operator abandonment, the constantly broken escalators, and the candy bar and french fry and cellphone arrests.
Sure, I won't be able to avoid taking the Metro at times, but I can try to keep as much of my cash away from WMATA as I can, because I know that it only gets exchanged for shoddy, antagonistic service.

WMATA's counsel urged this court to weigh the medical reports and physicians' testimony offered at trial so as to find that Duncan was able to perform medium lifting.
WMATA never offered an adequate explanation for its failure to accommodate Duncan, despite knowing of his disability and having a position available for him to perform.

In May 2001, WMATA broke ground on the extension; by April 29, 2002, a bridge was being erected over the Capitol Beltway.
The residents in the area of the new line wanted minimal noise and disruption from the train, so WMATA built most of the extension in a very shallow cut and cover, about 12 feet underground.
In some places, the train was essentially built at the level of the surface, but the tracks were built with walls around them and earth was piled on top of the "tunnel." The extension includes a total of 1,700 feet of double-track at grade and 10,500 feet of covered route.

EPIC is a strong advocate of open government, and has made use of the federal Freedom of Information Act and other open government rules many times to obtain information from the government about a wide range of policy issues, including consumer privacy, electronic surveillance, encryption controls and Internet content regulation.
However, there are two sections in the new PARP that deserve comments as they may allow the WMATA’s PARP administrators to deny information access requests for illegitimate reasons, thereby precluding the public and the media adequate oversight over the WMATA’s activities.
Our view is that the disclosure by the WMATA of personal information to a federal agency requires a court order as well as accounting by the WMATA.We would be glad to answer any question you may have on these comments.

His work as president of the New York City Transit Authority from 1984 to 1990 and as Chief General Manager of the Toronto Transit Commission in Canada from 1995-1999 earned him a great deal of operating credibility, despite his rough handling of politics and labor unions.
