At age 40, WMBR keeps riding the waves - MIT News Office
WMBR is both a student activity and a community station; MIT provides an annual operating grant and listener contributions pay for capital improvements.

WMBR takes a look back at 30 years of FM radio
WMBR Nightly News, a cooperative effort of both WMBR and radio station WGBH, will run on weeknights from 8 to 8:30 pm and will feature both national and local news.
The decision to run a news segment was made largely because of WMBR staff interest, not due to overwhelming listener demand, said Shawn Mamros G, a former member of WMBR.
Today, WMBR broadcasts 18 hours a day from 8 am to 2 am, staff numbers over 100, and power of transmission is 360 watts -- the second most powerful college radio station in the Boston area, said Allen R. Kent '63, a member of the Technology Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) which holds WMBR's license.

WMBR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is the third set of call letters for the station.
Although call letters are not technically for sale, Turner and WTBS worked out a loophole whereby Turner gave a $25,000 donation to WTBS with an agreement that WTBS would apply for new call letters, with a second donation of $25,000 promised if the FCC were to subsequently grant the letters to Turner.
All went as planned, WTBS used the donation for new transmitter equipment, and on November 10, 1979 the station signed on as WMBR with 200 watts of power.

The honor came in the midst of a $150,000 renovation of the station's un-air-conditioned headquarters in the basement of Walker Memorial (WMBR stands for Walker Memorial Basement Radio).
The changeover to WMBR occurred on the air on Nov. 10, 1979 with a 200-watt signal.

WMBR operates in stereo on 88.1 MHz from the top of the Eastgate student apartment building, with 720 watts ERP from 90 meters (295 feet) above average terrain.
While the Turner money did allow WMBR to replace its transmitting equipment, the homemade 1960s-vintage studio equipment was beginning to show its age, and also prevented the station from upgrading to stereo until it could be replaced.
WMBR finally “flipped the switch” to stereo on May 13, 1987, and a minor upgrade to 360 watts ERP was granted by the FCC and completed by the station on March 2, 1989.

Pinkow says “Once they heard from our listeners, that was one of the key things that turned them around.” The programming board, after an appeals process and the outpouring of letters, reversed its decision exactly one week later on June 14.
