WMC also forecast consistent output and a strong market for its commodities, with analysts expecting Olympic Dam to recover in 2004 from last year's 10 percent slide in copper output.
WMC Resource's shares gained nearly five percent before easing by early afternoon to be up 2.1 percent at A$5.43 in a slightly firmer overall market.
WMC Resources said average U.S. dollar nickel prices for 2003 increased 42 percent compared to 2002, although gains were eroded in local currency terms by the Australian dollar's appreciation against its U.S. counterpart.

WMC confirmed today (Monday) it would be sending out a detailed scheme booklet to shareholders ahead of a demerger vote late next month, more than 12 months after the board of the world's ninth largest mining company rejected an informal A$10.20/share or A$11 billion-plus takeover proposition from the second biggest global resources giant, Alcoa [NYSE:AA].
The WMC directors have recommended that shareholders vote in favour of the demerger and Morgan even took an early swipe at them in the event the resolution is defeated.
WMC boldly estimated in the scheme booklet that Alumina Ltd would generate a net profit of A$218 million this calendar year and A$330 million in 2003, while WMC Resources was forecast to catapult from A$73 million this year to A$261 million next year.

 Olympic gains: WMC Resources is set to hit nameplate capacity
Despite the recent recommissioning of the copper smelter at WMC Resources’ Olympic Dam mine in South Australia, the company is still trying to finalise repairs to its copper solvent extraction plant, severely damaged in a fire involving kerosene in October 2001.
WMC is putting a positive spin on this extra work saying it will add to the integrity of the next copper smelter campaign at a fraction of the cost of fixing the problem if it had happened during a campaign.
The most recent quarterly report from WMC also says that uranium production improved by 19% during that period reflecting the contribution of the rebuilt uranium solvent extraction plant and that this is expected to increase further in the subsequent quarter, with full acid supply restored following completion of the smelter shutdown.

August 31, 2004- - WMC Resources Ltd., the world's third- largest producer of nickel, agreed to join Linear Gold Corp. in a venture to explore for metals and gold in Mexico.
Melbourne-based WMC Resources will have the option to take up a 60 percent stake in four properties in the Mexican state of Chiapas, if it pays $1.93 million by 2007, which includes spending on exploration, a statement from Canadian-based Linear Gold said.
WMC is exploring for more materials as rising global economic recovery and Chinese expansion drain global stockpiles and sent prices of base metals surging.

After WMC decided to get out of the Philippines, the FTAA was subsequently transferred to Sagittarius Mines, which is the entity through which Indophil and its Philippine partners, Alsons Corp and the Tampakan Group of Companies, hold their interest in Tampakan.

Two charges allege that WMC Resources Ltd, as principal employer at the Victor underground mine, contravened Section 13 of the Act by failing to ensure that people at the mine were not exposed to hazards and that this failure resulted in the deaths of the two men.
The first alleges that WMC Resources Ltd failed to ensure that geotechnical aspects were adequately considered in the design of the mine, in that it failed to carry out numerical modelling to identify the level of rock stress in the crown pillar.
The second alleges that WMC Resources Ltd failed to ensure appropriate stope and pillar dimensions were determined in relation to the underground stoping systems.
