WNEW 1130 AM - "The World's Greatest Radio Station"
Fresh-FM (102.7 FM) officially became WWFS last Tuesday, meaning that for the first time since Feb. 13, 1934, New York doesn't have a WNEW.
But while this closes the book on a major chapter in city radio history, it's been years since WNEW really meant much.

WBBR - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
WNEW was one of the best-known radio stations in the U.S., pioneering the playing of phonograph records of current hit songs.
WNEW was also the home of New York Giants football broadcasts for many years, much of that in an era when radio listenership was high due to home games being fled out on television.
In 1988, WNEW and WNEW-FM went through a major ownership change, as their owners, Metromedia, sold half interest in the stations to Westwood One.

WNEW's birth came from the merger of one of America's oldest stations, WAAM of Newark, with WODA of Paterson.
The WNEW call letters have been attributed to Newark, New York and to one of the WNEW founders, Ed Wynn (with the initials standing for Network Ed Wynn).
WNEW moved from 1280 to 1130 in the big frequency swap of 1941.

WNEW's on-site reporter and engineer were not set up to carry play-by-play coverage of the trial, only periodic bulletins.
But because public interest was so high, WNEW didn't want to switch to, say, an orchestral remote that would prevent the station from using its logistical advantage to break in with each shard of news.
Block was the warm body sitting at the microphone back in the WNEW studios at 501 Madison Ave., and his suggestion to WNEW general manager Bernice Judis was that he fill the downtime by playing records.

 RWonline - RW Special Report
The scope and revered place of WNEW's place in radio history are summed up by the next-to-last line of the book, which calls WNEW "the one station that broke all the rules and got away with it longer than anyone else." Start with that thought, then go back to the beginning.
WNEW was unique, depending on the personality of each jock to set the tone - and the music - for each shift.
Listeners felt that WNEW and its counterparts in other cities were there for them, Neer writes; and they pledged their loyalty.

 CNN.com - How to kill a radio station - Mar. 3, 2003
"WNEW was the hip place, where the hip people who were into music went," says Pat St. John, a DJ at rival WPLJ -- until he joined 'NEW in 1987.
WNEW thrived through most of the '80s, its family of loyal listeners tuning in even as free-form faded away and playlists began.
But instead of a Garcia tribute, WNEW stayed in its format-of-the-moment: a mix of classic and alternative rock.

The money was in AM, and though WNEW was owned by Metromedia, a large corporation, the station's employees were given plenty of leeway.
At WNEW, Neer writes, the station was sold several times in the 1980s, and -- with rare exceptions -- each time the new owner brought in a consultant with little feel for the market or the station's history.
By the end, WNEW was a shell of its former self -- and it's not alone, Neer says.

WNEW-FM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WNEW is a New York City FM radio station operating at 102.7 MHz and owned and operated by CBS Radio.
The timing proved to be unfortunate: after the death of The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia in 1995, bereft Dead fans turned to the station for solace, only to be greeted with current hits from The Smashing Pumpkins and Hootie and the Blowfish and very little about their fallen idol.
In 1998, WNEW moved to a harder-edged rock format and continued to slump in the ratings.

Infinity argues that the ``Teen Week'' song broadcast on November 15, 2000 is a mix of random lines of dialogue from the ``Opie and Anthony Show,'' popular culture, politics and other sources, consisting of oblique sexual references which would not be inescapably understood by a child.
Although the mix broadcast on WNEW (FM) was constructed of lines of dialogue that may not have originally described sexual activities, the mix as aired inescapably refers to oral sex between a daughter and her father and other sexual activities.
The Commission has found similar language to be indecent when used in a context where the sexual import is inescapable.
