Eye on Insurance - WPRI study is deeply flawed
WPRI’s latest report, “Health Insurance for Wisconsin Public Schools – The Case for Competitive Bidding,” suggests that if all public school employees were put into the state health plan, school districts would save $100 million, which could be used to boost teacher salaries.
WPRI’s savings are based on the assumption that every school district employee in every county would pick the lowest-cost HMO available.
WPRI could serve a valuable service if it asked legislators to tackle the health care cost crisis instead of gutting the benefit program for the hardworking employees of Wisconsin’s public school system.

Fire engulfs tanker in Port of Providence - Boston.com
He told WPRI that preliminary reports were that lightning had struck the ship.
The ship was burning very close to large storage tanks at the port, although it was unknown whether the tanks on shore had anything flammable in them.
Doughty told WPRI that he expected it would be several hours before firfighters get the blaze under control.

NCPA - Crime & Gun Control - WPRI: Wisconsin Sentencing
A new study analyzing the felony sentences of defendants sentenced to the Wisconsin state prison system finds few offenders received "maximum" sentences, even though most of the individuals studied were repeat criminals.
These factors, taken together, resulted in a 26 percent decline in the average time served before release from 1990 to 1995.

One Wisconsin Now | Blog: WPRI is Long On Criticism Short on Solutions
Unsurprisingly they trot out their same tired reason for any meaningful reform benefiting the common good, "it costs too much." While WPRI thought it prudent to spend time and energy criticizing the Wisconsin Health Plan, it seems rather curious that they themselves have not submitted a real plan for public review.
A quick check of the reports listed on their website shows that in the midst of this crisis, they have not generated one plan that is even remotely comparable to the three circulating in Wisconsin currently.
Until they offer a real plan of their own, perhaps WPRI should hold off on their criticisms of people that want to make life easier for the average citizen.

OnMilwaukee.com Milwaukee Politics: For the health of It: Critique of state health plan off the mark
The WPRI put Lakeland College economics professor Scott Niederjohn and Mark Schug, director of the UWM Center for Economic Education, to the task of tearing down what's known as the Wisconsin Health Plan.
In an interview, Riemer says the WPRI duo shouldn't get a lot of attention for their work, since it's quite premature to estimate the real cost of the plan.
Niederjohn is no stranger to the WPRI researchers' fold, most recently authoring an attack on the Milwaukee Public School's teachers union, promoting the idea that the union's negotiating stance on a residency requirement is an example of union greed overarching quality education.

Great Lakes Center: Wisconsin Think Tank's Report on High School Learning Gaps Gets Two Fs for 'Fatally Flawed'
"Unfortunately, the WPRI report is bad science disguised and advanced as sound research," said Teri Battaglieri, director of the Great Lakes Center, an independent nonprofit coalition dedicated to supporting and disseminating sound academic research on education issues.
The Think Twice analysis of the WPRI report was conducted by William J. Mathis, adjunct associate professor of school finance at the University of Vermont and a former National Superintendent of the Year finalist.
However, the data in the WPRI report cannot support a recommendation focused merely on requiring that all students take more rigorous coursework, without also devoting resources toward supports for teachers and students.

A Tragedy of Ethics by Jim Parisi - The Digital Journalist
The TV station knew their reporter owned the place, and after ONE WEEK on the job trusted him to be objective writing a story that involved his own nightclub.
When I first heard the tragic story...the network piece ended with this sentence: “WPRI has a special interest in this nightclub because one of their reporters was part owner.” That comment shocked me, but no one else seemed to pick up on it.
WPRI if anything, will help solve this tragedy because of the valuable video shot by their photographer that fateful night.

I saw a reporter from WPRI on Fox News that went on at length about what a great person her colleague was.
She was not bending over to be fair, she was serving as a character witness while covering the story.
It would have been good to hear a reporter after providing that information say "We are also trying to find out if pyro has been used before at The Station." Learning today that pyro had been used there in the past, puts the statements made yesterday in a much different light.

 Media Rants 9
The WPRI study argued that if the state were to try to mend its budget deficit by increasing sales and income taxes, over 84,000 people would lose their jobs.
WMC's Jim Pugh said "This study clearly shows those tax increases are job killers." In a Jan. 23 editorial the state's most influential newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, used the WPRI study as support for no tax increases: "But any impulse to solve this problem with higher taxes ought to be resisted.
Though the WPRI has deep Republican roots and has received millions of dollars from the conservative Bradley Foundation, New Democrat Doyle parroted their tax study in his January 30th State of the State address: "Wisconsin is already one of the nation's most heavily taxed states.
