The WPSL was founded in 1997 and folded in 2001.
The WPSL consisted of four teams located in the Eastern United States in 2000.
However, a WPSL All-Star team competed in two exhibition games against the Tennessee All-Stars as part of the National Softball Association's A division Eastern World Series in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The only stand-alone national women's soccer league in the country, the WPSL was formed as a regional league serving the western United States and was granted national league status by the U.S. Adult Soccer Association (USASA) in 2002.
The WPSL's goals are to promote women's soccer at the highest level possible in North America and to do it with class, distinction and respect for the sport but more importantly, the players and the fans.
The WPSL season runs from May 1st to August 1st, leaving enough time (two weeks on average) for their collegiate players to get ready for their respective preseasons.

Patti Carroll in goal, and the entire Lynx defense were just exceptional in holding the Fury, who have scored a massive 24 goals in only 7 games this season, to just one on the evening.

The league actually began on May 30, 1997 with teams in Atlanta, Charlotte, Durham, Hampton Roads (Va.), Orlando, and Tampa.
In December, 1998, the name of the league was changed to Women's Pro Softball League (WPSL) and in 2002 it was changed again to National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) with league play starting in 2004.
Softball became an official Olympic sport in 1996.

None of the players get any financial compensation for playing because there are high school and college players on club rosters who would lose their college eligibility if they got paid for playing or if they played on a club with other players who were getting paid for playing.
Shek Borokowski of FC Indiana says to newspapers in Sweden that WPSL teams have a choice of either being fully pro or fully amateur.
No indication yet on the divisional arrangements but the Central Division is probably still going to very lightweight in numbers unless more come in during the winter.
