WREK FM ("Wreck", from the Rambling Wreck) is Georgia Tech's radio station, located at 91.1 MHz FM in Atlanta.
WREK's studios were located in the annex to the Alexander Memorial Coliseum from 1978 until 2004.
Visitors to WREK's Coliseum studios were often startled by its walls, which were covered by thick layers of posters, set lists, and other music memorabilia, as well as the giant electromechanical broadcast automation machines and other large racks of monitoring and control equipment.

 The WREK 425 Watt RF Power Amplifier Story
The WREK 425 Watt RF power amplifier, also known as the "Goat-Mitter" was designed by Geoffrey N. Mendenhall (dubbed the Goatman by WREK announcer, Ed Esserman) and constructed entirely with hand tools by Geoff and the WREK staff in August of 1968.
The 450 Watt WREK transmitter was known as the "Big 600" because the combination of 450 Watts transmitter output power with an antenna system power gain of 1.41 yielded an effective radiate power of 600 Watts.
He learned that WREK was in need of a new transmitter in the late 1980's and in his position as VP Engineering at BE, he arranged for WREK to obtain a new BE transmitter at low cost.

Live at WREK is a celebration of the musical format and the 30th anniversary of WREK radio.

 WREKNET Streaming - Live, Archive, etc.
WREK has been a pioneer in Internet radio broadcasting since 1994 when we were the first station ever to broadcast our signal using a client-server approach (on November 7th, 1994).
Back then we were using "CyberRadio1", software written by Georgia Tech student and WREK staff member John Selbie.
We chose it over some competing technologies (freeware and commercial) due to its sound quality at low bitrates, and its low CPU load (and thus the ability to be encoded and decoded by the PC platforms of the day).

When I first started working at WREK, my musical education was comprised of Top 40 with a small knowledge of the "unimaginative" Atlanta music scene.
The longer that I worked at WREK, the more I felt that my tastes in music had changed or should I say "evolved." WREK exposed me to music I had never heard before, or ever knew existed for that matter.
In Macon, where I was raised, I would have really had to search the public libraries for anything that WREK plays today (and probably no public library has the extensive library that WREK boasts today).
