  Friends of WRPI Home Page
The Friends organization took a leadership role in the ambitious re-vitalization of WRPI's broadcast facilities in 1997, helping to raise nearly $40,000 in funds from individuals and private foundations in recognition of the station's vital role in the local media ecology.
Since then, the Friends of WRPI have continued to raise money in support of "communiversity radio," the partnership between RPI students and community volunteers that provides 18 hours or more of music, sports, news and public affairs programming to listeners in the NY State Capital Region, northwestern Massachusetts and southwestern Vermont every day.
In cooperation with RPI and the Union, the Friends of WRPI constitute the third leg of support for the radio station.

Polytechnic Online - News: Changes at WRPI cause debate
WRPI currently consists of 53 students, two faculty members, eight alumni, two RPI staff members, two students from other colleges, and 36 community members, bringing total membership for WRPI to 103 members.
The E-Board passed a motion at yesterday’s meeting that stated the WRPI station is to move toward compliance with the 5 percent community membership, or to present otherwise to the E-Board by December 5 (the current number of community members is approximately 35 percent).
Several students at WRPI felt tension had reached more of a boiling point six to eight months ago, and hence there was a meeting held over the summer to try and focus what needed to happen with the station to maintain ties between community members and students.

Polytechnic Online - Ed/Op: Personnel shortage causes WRPI outages
WRPI is a Union-funded and student-run club and is unique to some extent in that we serve not only the RPI student body, but a 70-mile radius of listeners as well.
WRPI allows for social discourse, non-format music radio, and coverage of events that may interest our listenership, including sports programming.
For those following the WRPI sports story, you should know that not a single member of the WRPI sports department has met our clearance or membership requirements (see The Polytechnic from November 8)—this, in short, means that none of our station members are interested in making a commitment to sports broadcasting.

The station WRPI is licensed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, but is managed by a student organization, whose officials comprise an elected executive committee, or E-comm.
In the same newsletter, Steve Pierce, president of the Friends of WRPI, wrote: “The community service/alternative programming philosophy that marked much of the last decade at WRPI (and perhaps much of its nearly 50 year history as a full power FM station) is now being challenged.
While some students understand that WRPI is a 10,000 watt radio station reaching hundreds of thousands of people in three states and has an educational and non-commercial mission that extends far beyond the campus community, others don’t.

Polytechnic Online - News: Student membership in WRPI at historic lows
The large number of Troy area volunteers at WRPI is quickly making the campus’ radio station much more of a community effort—a drastic change from previous years, when it was a chiefly student-operated organization.
Other WRPI alumni went on to such broadcasters as ABC-TV’s Kevin Hamburger, an executive producer for "Politically Incorrect," and NBC’s Chuck Jablonski, who left as the station’s chief engineer several years ago.
In 1969, the station was upgraded to 10,000 watts and now boasts a listening area that spans 60 miles north to south and 40 miles east to west.

I started out wanting to be a news announcer; WRPI had a small news department, and they were happy to have me join them.
When I wasn’t working at the station, I was usually listening to it (and if I wasn’t listening to WRPI, I was listening to the classical stations in the area, WAMC and WMHT).
There was a perennial controversy during my years at WRPI — the staff and volunteers wanted to play Good Stuff, and the student government (which funded us) wanted us to play the same music they could hear on WTRY, the local Top 40 outlet.

Hudson Mohawk IMC: Amy Goodman Draws Large Crowd but Questions About WRPI fill the air
Changes in the student governing body of WRPI indicate that its legacy of “Communiversity” radio cannot be taken for granted.
What these loyal listeners tend to forget, however, and what has been illustrated clearly this year by the removal of many progressive shows, such as Free Speech Radio, Africa in Motion, Necessary Radio, and The Portside, is that WRPI, although important to the community, is just a club for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s students.
Africa in Motion has been off the air for months now, Ekalele says, and although he misses it, he doesn’t miss the hostile environment that he says overtook WRPI since the most recent E-comm was elected last December.
