WRT54G - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The WRT54G is famous for being the first consumer-level network device that had its firmware source code released to satisfy the obligations of the GNU GPL.
Later revisions increased the CPU speed to 200 MHz, and the later Linksys firmware overclocks the MIPS processor to 216 MHz to resolve stability issues.
With the switch to the VxWorks software with v5 and newer of the WRT54G and GS, replacing the previous Linux software, very high numbers of users are reporting problematic wireless connections.

 Tone's Notes - Configuring a LinkSys WRT54G as a Wireless Ethernet Bridge
This is possible using 3rd party firmware (sveasoft) which allows the wrt54g to operate in "client" mode, where it forwards packets from its connected devices to the main wireless router, using a wireless link.
I got my wrt54g running in client mode - that is, it serves as a bridge between a PC attached to it and the main wireless router.
A single wrt54g (with the right firmware) can operate as a "client" of any other wireless router, and create a bridge so any device connected to it will be able to access your network and the internet.

The Linksys WRT54G is a strong candidate for part 97 operation.
A possible use for the WRT54G is to create a standalone APRS digipeater and Internet Gateway.
When combined with the wireless bridging capability that already exists in the WRT54G, this would provide a way to deploy more, cheaper APRS digis while eliminating the radio traffic between the digi and a separate internet gateway.

For the first time in telephone history, the U.S. is each year using fewer telephone numbers than it did the year before as people scrap their fixed phones for mobile ones and give up their fax lines in favor of Internet file attachments.
Ah yes, the Internet is itself a disruptive technology, and where we'll see the WRT54G and its brethren shortly begin to have startling impact.
You see, it isn't what the WRT54G does that matters, but what it CAN do when reprogrammed with a different version of Linux with different capabilities.

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router - Review : Networking - CNET Asia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The WRT54G is no exception: A tabbed, browser-based utility provides access to all the router's features, with the basic settings summarized in the top Setup tab.
In Wireless-G mode, the WRT54G averaged 15.6Mbps, a little more than three times the speed of the fastest 802.11b router we've tested and fairly close to the real-world speeds of 802.11a, which hover around 20Mbps.
The biggest problem with the WRT54G, however, was that when we tested the device with both 802.11b and Wireless-G clients simultaneously, throughput devolved to roughly 6.7Mbps, closer to the real-world performance that's typical of 802.11b devices.

 The Open Source WRT54G Story
The story of the Linksys Wireless-G Router (model WRT54G) and how you can turn a $60 router into a $600 router is a little bit CSI and a little bit Freaks and Geeks.
The WRT54G was released in 2003 in anticipation of the 802.11g standard, with its theoretical maximum bandwidth of 54Mbps compared to 802.11b’s 11Mbps.
In many respects the WRT54G is a typical wireless router –; it accepts an incoming broadband link such as cable or DSL and shares it between its built-in four-port Ethernet switch and antennae for broadcasting the signal to wireless clients.

In configuring the WRT54G, it seems I have to power cycle the whole network - not just the WRT54G - relatively often (after each change, for example) for changes in the WRT54G's settings to be acknowledged.
When configuring the WiFi settings on the WRT54G, be sure to TURN OFF AIRPORT on in-range Macs, or you'll have to reset the router to factory settings many times on your way to figuring out the need to do this.

On the hardware side of things, since many consumer-grade Wi-Fi routers are based around Broadcom's chipsets and reference design, it may be possible to load up SveaSoft or OpenWrt on certain, but not all, G devices from Apple, Belkin, Dell, and Microsoft.

Boing Boing: The great Linksys WRT54G debate
Linksys was using embedded Linux for the WRT54G gateway, a Wi-Fi access point, router, and Ethernet switch, that sells for as low as $50 these days.
A couple of years ago, Linksys and Broadcom (the company that makes the device's Wi-Fi chips and created the reference platform that Linksys uses) were pushed to meet GNU and other license terms and release the modified OS and accompanying packages.
Now folks who hack the WRT54G with their own firmware noticed that newer models stopped allowing these hacks and were, in fact, now running the proprietary VxWorks OS.

Answer: Well, if you consider the WRT54G as "a whole unit", that implies that because it has a bit of GPL stuff, it should all be GPLd.

Linksys courts Linux hackers with WRT54G"L"
The L version is identical to the "series 4" WRT54G units that Linux hobbyists have long enjoyed hacking, according to the company.
The new, VxWorks-based WRT54G "series 5" models have 2MB of Flash, and 8MB of RAM, compared with 4MB of Flash and 16MB of RAM in the earlier, Linux-based versions.
Although the "series 5" devices offer Linux hobbyists less elbow room to load alternative firmware (assuming they could get around the bootloader to install it), it seems likely the hacker community will rise to the challenge.
