Subaru Impreza WRX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The WRX has become a popular choice for automobile enthusiasts wherever it is sold for its high performance, great handling, and relatively affordable price.
Compared to the base Impreza, the WRX had wider low-profile tires, larger brakes (further improved in later versions with the fitting of four-piston calipers and larger discs), and firmer, higher quality suspension components.
The Subaru Impreza WRX is used as the basis for the Saab 9-2X Aero.

The Impreza WRX STI is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter DOHC boxer engine producing 300 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 300 lb-ft of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.

The WRXs value is immense and we appreciate that one manufacturer is offering an all-wheel-drive, performance platform under the $25,000 mark.
One change with the 2006 WRX that we were not happy to see is the switch to an electronically-controlled throttle.
One of the most interesting facts is that this 2006 WRX saw the same wheel horsepower improvement from the intake and exhaust as our 2004 tester.

Follow-Up Test: 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
With all the attention surrounding the release of the higher-performance WRX STi and its rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, you might think a plain old WRX wagon would have lost some of its charm for our editors.
Now entering its third year on the market, the regular WRX makes a mere 227 horsepower —; the STi makes a cool 300, the Evo makes a conservatively estimated 271, and 240-horse Accords and Altimas are all over the road.
We've tested both a WRX sedan and a wagon before, but Subaru has made a handful of changes for the 2004 model year.

With the ABS on, Project WRX made three consectutive stops in 118, 117 and 122 ft. However, ABS activation was slow and inconsistent, even when the pedal was crushed with anger.
Since Project WRX spends lots of time in the gravel, it was only a natural progression to hit the dirt with our radar gun, big brakes and 16-inch wheels with BFGoodrich g-Force KDWS tires to find out.
However, since Project WRX isn't ours and must be returned to Subaru of America after its stay in our stable, we figure taking care of its paint is a smart thing to do.

WRX - Subaru Impreza WRX 2006 Review by autoMedia.com
Subaru has taken a great step to mend this, now equipping all WRXs with the larger 2.5-liter boxer motor as has been available in the WRX STi since the 2004 model year.
The 2.5-liter engine, as in the WRX, is also a cleaner cooker than the old 2.0-liter (a rather filthy little motor) and qualifies for Low Emissions Vehicle II (LEVII) standards.
Sleeper, thy name is WRX wagon—only a few pounds heavier, it'll still paste a big smile on your face every time you leave Mustangs and every Integra in your wake.

 WRX Tuning
The most significant differences between our WRX and a Japan WRX is the comparatively poor quality of the gasoline we get in the US and our very strict emissions and fuel economy regulations.
The introduction of the standard "New Age Impreza" WRX, or model GDA 4-door and GGA 5-door, brings a divergence between the Japanese WRX and the STI models that did not exist before.
So, while we now have the WRX, the new US and standard Japan specification WRX does not have quite the same raw edge that of every Japan base WRX had during the 1993-2000 GC8 series.

Add Subaru's four-wheel drive to the equation and you get mean cornering grip, and, to aid in applying that tenacity to the pavement, the WRX has 16-inch, 55-series tires and its wheels are suspended independently with stiffer dampers at all corners.
Peer out the windshield of the WRX and the aforementioned mono nostril--actually a hood scoop designed to funnel air into the turbo--is quite evident.
In great contrast to the exterior, the cabin of the WRX is positively restrained and functional.

2002 Subaru WRX - Four Seasons Test - Automobile Magazine
Our Four Seasons WRX was genuinely loved by everyone who drove it, whether going from one side of Ann Arbor to the other or traveling from Michigan to Colorado.
We opted for the WRX Sport Wagon over the sedan, because the wagon is a more practical proposition for a staff that has lately been procreating like rabbits, even though the sedan's 0.8-inch-wider front track and 1.0-inch-wider rear give it marginally better grip and handling.
The WRX isn't that great for hauling huge amounts of cargo, either, for, although the wagon load bay takes 27.9 cubic feet of goodies with the rear seats up and 61.6 cubic feet with them down, the sloping rear window impinges on the type of things you can carry.

We saw the first glimpse of it in the 2002 Impreza WRX, and it will continue with the 2004 WRX STi and 2004 Forester, before eventually spreading to much of the company's lineup.
The steering ratio on the STi is quicker than on the WRX (15.2 to 1 versus 16.5 to 1), the car rides 0.4 inch lower, and all STis feature Brembo brake components and 12.7-inch front rotors (12.3 inches for the rear brakes).
The WRX was the company's first foray into providing Americans with a serious road car, and it succeeded beyond expectations (to all of you who bought one, and contributed to the notion of an American STi, let me be the first to say, "Thanks!").

Compared to the Impreza WRX STI, Impreza WRX STI spec C is about 70 kilograms lighter through the adaptation of lighter glass, a trunk lid composed of aluminum, and thinner roof construction.

IGN: Subaru Announces Impreza WRX STi
This is the first WRX to see as much performance stateside as its Asian and European counterparts.
You all know that the current WRX howls to the tune of 227 horsepower, that number (good for a rocket start of 0-to-60 in 5.5) is nothing, nothing compared to the 300 hp @ 6,000 rpm and the transmission killing 300 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm.
The still current WRX looks to be the love spawn of a Skyline GT-R and a Volkswagen Beetle after a night of jagers and kamikazes--bug eyes and all.

I have a '06 WRX Limited wagon, with a 5-speed.
Because of the relatively tall gearing of the '06 WRX, I often find myself cruising in 4th gear (thinking I'm in top gear), and a gear indicator would just remind me to upshift into 5th.
I have noticed that shifting from 1st to 2nd and again from 3rd to 4th at high RPM (greater than 5000 RPM), is not really smooth or quick.

Sparco's WRX, along with the others of the fearsome foursome we are featuring in this issue, really exemplify how good the WRX is. We have waited a long time to get the real deal--the looks and the power of the rally car and it is a relief that the wait proved to be worth it.
Sparco's WRX has been attacked on all fronts with engine performance, handling and comfort all addressed with quick-hitting bolt-ons.

A couple of years ago, Eddie Alterman of Automobile magazine called and asked me why the WRX was such an important car.
Our main focus is not about the fastest, coolest looking WRX, rather we offer technical information parts with which one can build what we like to call, "a driver's tool." The sections that follow also have special sections commenting on racing or high-performance modifications we would recommend.
The 'WRX Parts' section then has listings of the performance parts we offer at this time.

I think the reason there are so many "teenagers" or the like on the WRX boards is because it's an exciting car and the price point is obtainable as opposed to a car like the Audi S4.

When our long-term WRX was new, it needed 5.9 seconds to reach 60—1.5 seconds behind an M2's time—and did the quarter in 14.6 seconds at 93 mph.
We mention this because the list of parts that are changed or upgraded on the WRX's 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four engine does not include a new, stronger clutch, the part that takes the most abuse during testing.
The result is 320 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 305 pound-feet of torque at 6000 rpm; stock WRXs have 227 horsepower and 217 pound-feet of torque.
