WSAZ began the decade of the 70's with new modern facilities.
He is WSAZ television 3's chief engineer John Clay, who put the station on the air in 1949, a true pioneer of the television industry who retired in 1986.
WSAZ pioneered this growth in the Kanawha Valley and the Tri-State.

By March, WSAZ was moved to Huntington, West Virginia; power was raised from 50 watts to 100 watts; and frequency was shifted to 1240 kilocycles.
Early in the week of Jan. 18, WSAZ began hourly broadcasts of flood news, the stage of the Ohio river and its tributaries and the predictions of the Weather Bureau.
WSAZ chief announcer Beckley Smith and former Marshall player Harold "Pat" Patterson were at the microphone for the initial broadcast, and their audience (the signal in those days could be heard as far away as Maine and Florida) listened to the action as Marshall beat Concord 18-16.

 WSAZ Radio: "The Worst Station from A to Z
WSAZ had been such a headache to radio engineer Glenn Chase that he claimed to have selected the call letters WSAZ to stand for the "Worst Station from A to Z." According to Chase, "Even a loud voice could put the station off the air."
In late 1924, WSAZ was notified by the Commerce Department to change frequency to 1230 kilocycles.
By April 1927, WSAZ was ready to take to the air with 100 watts of power and a daily broadcast schedule of four hours each evening except Sundays, now at 1240 on the dial.

In a press release from Time Warner Cable, local general manager, Russ Pomfrey, wrote that WSAZ station officials recently sent the company a legal notice requiring them to remove the NBC channel from their lineup on midnight Oct. 15.
“We’re disappointed that WSAZ management may punish cable viewers by withholding WSAZ unless Time Warner Cable finds a way to move other networks from the basic line up in order make room for MyZ, which may not merit the channel space or lineup position that they are demanding,” Pomfrey said.
