Emerging plant pests - Wheat streak mosaic virus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
WSMV can be transmitted in seed at a low frequency (0.01%), which may explain its entry to Australia and its movement between regions.
WSMV is carried by the wheat curl mite from other infected plants into and through crops.
Overseas, WSMV is managed, where it is significant, by controlling over-seasoning hosts, particularly volunteer cereals and to a lesser extent by managing the wheat curl mite.

Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus and the Wheat Curl Mite | University of Kentucky Entomology
Both the mites and WSMV persist on living, susceptible plants, but not on wheat or other grasses as they mature and dry down.
The spread of WSMV is related to the dispersal of the mite vector.

 Wheat Streak Mosaic
This disease is caused by the wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), and it usually occurs in areas of North Dakota where both winter and spring wheats are grown.
WSMV can be spread mechanically through leaf rubbing, but it is primarily spread by the wheat curl mite, Aceria tulipae, a very tiny mite (less than 1/100 inch long) not visible to the naked eye.
At early seeding, air temperatures are generally warm and the mites reproduce rapidly and have a longer time to build up on the emerged wheat seedlings prior to cold or freezing temperatures.

The possibility that WSMV may be seed-borne in wheat compounds the difficulty of managing the disease.
The controversy over whether WSMV is seed-transmitted in wheat remains unclear as does [seed's] involvement in perpetuating the virus.
To my knowledge, WSMV is not seed-transmitted in wheat but is seed-transmitted in some maize cultivars at low levels (0.1 to 0.2 percent).

GRDC - Advice Sheets - Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (June 2002)
In the countries in which WSMV is known to occur, serious crop damage is rare, as the mite responsible for spreading the virus requires favourable conditions to survive over summer.
WSMV is spread by a tiny (0.3mm) white, cigar-shaped mite called the wheat curl mite (Aceria tosichella).
In countries where WSMV is known to cause damage, control relies on reducing both the mite population and the numbers of infected host plants that survive.

Several spray WSMV inoculation methods are being evaluated on winter wheat seedlings in the greenhouse.
Greenhouse WSMV experiments determined the best seedling inoculation method utilized filtered leaf extract containing carborundum and applying the inoculum to 3 week old seedlings at 5.0 pounds per square inch with an atomizer held 5 -7 cm from the leaf surface.
Greenhouse WSMV seedling inoculation studies were initiated to determine the effect of virus infection on leaf spot disease caused by Cochliobolus sativus.

The WSMV is transmitted from plant to plant by the feeding of all nymphal stages of the tiny (0.3 mm long), white, cigar-shaped wheat curl mite, Aceria (Eriophyes) tulipae (Figure 3).
During the late summer and early fall, the WSMV is carried by mites from the grass and corn to volunteer wheat plants.
The mites and the WSMV persist on wheat, barley, corn, millet, and susceptible perennial grasses such as buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) and foxtails (Alopecurus spp).

WSMV in Mexico appears to be genetically isolated from WSMV populations occurring in the Great Plains.
An analysis of nucleotide sequence variation indicated that differences between the three strains of WSMV may be largely explained by neutral mutation and genetic drift, with the US and Mexican strains separated for a longer period of time compared to strains in the US.
One region of the WSMV genome was devoid of nucleotide substitutions, implying strong selection for primary RNA sequence in the WSMV P3 gene.
