Web Services Resource Framework - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WSRF provides a clean set of methods stateless web services may implement to become stateful; instead of nonstandard stateful hacks, web services communicate with resource services which allow data to be stored and retrieved.
WSRF Resource Properties describes an interface to associate a set of typed values with a web-service which acts as a resource that may be read and manipulated in a standard way.
WSRF Resource Lifetime describes an interface to manage the lifetime of a resource.

Globus: Frequently Asked Questions About WSRF
WSRF specifications introduce mechanisms that we expect to be applicable to emerging specifications such as those being developed within the GGF Data Access and Integration Services (DAIS) working group and the OASIS Web Services Distributed Management (WSDM) technical committee.
WSRF represents a refactoring and evolution of OGSI that delivers essentially the same capabilities in a manner that is more in alignment with the Web services community.
The evolution of OGSI to WSRF will certainly delay the completion of a definitive set of specifications for managing state in a Web services context, as some time will be required to review the draft WSRF specifications within a standards body, a process that may of course result in significant changes to those specifications.

 WSRF (Web Services Resource Framework)
WSRF defines a new approach for accessing stateful resources which supports the grid computing infrastructure and also provides for stateful Web services in general - in other words, the special-case solution for grid computing (in OGSI) was generalized to the benefit of all Web services (through WSRF).
Support for WSRF will be available in the next generation of the Globus Toolkit, GT 4, which is due in early 2005 and will implement the full WSRF specification and comply with the latest Web services specifications.
WSRF represents further convergence in the infrastructure of grid computing and Web services, bringing the two communities closer together and spurring development of other shared tools and standards.

They submitted the outcome of their work to two new OASIS technical committees that were chartered to standardize the specifications: the OASIS WSRF TC, and the OASIS WSN TC.
The WSRF work intends to provide a way to access stateful resources and a standard set of message exchange patterns to use for the most common and generalized interactions involving stateful resources fronted by web services.
To address the goal of accessing stateful resources with web services, WSRF defines a way to use WS-Addressing to generate references to web services endpoints that provide access to stateful resources.

Having implemented a WSRF endpoint (remember the demo last week Mr Parastatidis?), I can state that the readable/writeable properties bit is quite nice.
Only, you should have a meta-property to list all other available properties, and it is left open whether bulk get/set is atomic or not.
Therefore, in any implementation of WSRF that is broadly callable by arbitrary SOAP stacks, having the URL==the resource is the only viable option, fault tolerance notwithstanding.

A.1. ...write a WSDL description of your WSRF stateful Web service
In general, we will import the WSDL file of every WSRF specification (such as WS-ResourceProperties) we intend to use in our service.
As we'll see later on, we will need to import other WSDL files as we start looking at other parts of the WSRF specification.
If we were writing strict WSDL, the only way of including operations and portTypes from WSRF specifications would be to actually copy and paste those definitions from the spec's WSDL file into our own WSDL file.
