The WSM cartridge cases are 2.1 inches in length while the WSSM cartridge case is a stubby 1.67 inches, for an actual difference of.43 inch.
The velocity of the.223 WSSM is in the same class as a handloaded.220 Swift.
At this writing the.243 WSSM is still in development and there remains a little fine-tuning to be completed before its release.

The 243 WSSMs are still not showing up despite being announced last year and being featured in this year's catalogs.
The initial reports we have on the real-world 223 WSSM rifles are not overly impressive.
And the news that bores must be chrome-lined to prevent excessive erosion sounds like the kiss of death to me. Yes, I am aware of successful rifles that have chrome-lined bores (many AR-15's for example).

Ensuring that the WSSM is general enough to accommodate all such topologies is good design, but a concrete implementation of the standard ultimately requires that choices be made.
As previously discussed, because the WSSM is an SOSA - focused solely on federated interoperability - it is not a panacea.
Accordingly, even if the WSSM were to completely standardize interoperable secure Web services across organizational boundaries and across commoditized security mechanisms, this would simply lead to an upsurge in products and services for managing the life cycle of the commodity components constituting the WSSM.

The.223 WSSM will be offered in the Supreme line with a 55-grain Ballistic Silvertip at a nominal 3850 fps muzzle velocity and in the Super-X line with a 55-grain Pointed Soft Point at 3850 fps or a 64-grain PowerPoint at 3600 fps.
The.243 WSSM will be initially offered in the Supreme line with a 55-grain Ballistic Silvertip at a screaming 4060 fps muzzle velocity and a 95-grain Ballistic Silvertip at 3250 fps plus a 100-grain PowerPoint loading at 3110 fps in the Super-X line.
So my position on the.223 WSSM (or any other.22 centerfire cartridge) for whitetail deer is simple: If it’s legal, and the rifleman is a serious hunter and skilled marksman who knows the capabilities and limitations of his tool, I support it.

 .243 WSSM
The new.243 WSSM, the subject of this article, is one of the original WSSM calibers.
The.243 WSSM is factory loaded close to the allowable maximum average pressure, which means that reloaders are unlikely to be able to improve much on published velocities.
In the.243 WSSM I would think that 70-80 grain bullets would be most appropriate for varmints and 90-100 grain bullets appropriate for deer and other medium game animals.

Introducing the New Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow™ Super Short in WSSM Calibers. @ Hunting & Fishing Gear Review
The WSSM concept itself provides an exceptionally efficient burn, primarily because of the larger diameter of the cartridge base.
The 243 caliber bullets used in the new 243 WSSM are among the most accurate and ballistically stable made.
Like its WSM counterpart, the new WSSM calibers will be chambered in the all new Winchester Controlled Round Push Feed action (CRPF) in the new Super Shadow stock design, creating a package with ultimate ballistics, accuracy, handling and durability.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I can honestly say the.223 WSSM is in my opinion the most exciting new cartridge to come down the pike in quite some time, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to get a first look at it.
The author believes that the new.223 WSSM cartridge is destined for success at least partially because of the new rifles being built and introduced along with it.
It could be said the.22 PPC is the grandfather of the.223 WSSM and, for that matter, all the current crop of "short magnum" cartridges.

 Winchester's Super Short Magnums
Designated as the.223 and.243 WSSM (Winchester Super Short Magnums), both are kind of like grown-up versions of the.22 and 6mm PPCs.
The 64-grain Power Point, however, is designed for use on smaller big game such as deer and antelope and should be a favorite with the many Texans in particular who swear the.22-250 and.220 Swift are perfect for those applications.
Of the three loads to be offered in the.243 WSSM, only one, the 55-grain Ballistic Silvertip in the Supreme line, will be a varmint load; the other two are both game loads consisting of a Supreme 95-grain BS and a Super-X 100-grain Power Point.

223 WSSM vs the 22-250 Rem. -- Browning Information and News
Even before the first Browning firearm chambered in WSSM calibers hit the dealer’s shelves, Internet chat rooms were buzzing with speculation and information about the new WSSM calibers.
The 223 and 243 WSSM cartridges are said to “burn up” barrels in as little as 300 rounds.
Test results show that even in non-chromed barrels, the wear performance of WSSM calibers is equal to the beloved 22-250.

24 Hour Campfire: gun writers opinions on 25WSSM
The skinny is that the case capacity of the Roberts and the WSSM are within a percent or two of each other.
Personally, I think the.25 WSSM is a great idea for a young hunter--or an old hunter who doesn't already have a.257 Roberts,.25-06,.260, 6.5x55, etc. I have been using a handloaded Bob for many, many years--in fact, since I was a young hunter myself.
The 25 WSSM is for the skillfull hunter and is a forgiving, user friendly cartridige to the inexperienced.

According to factory load tables, the new.243 WSSM slightly betters both of those two in velocity for all bullet weights, except for a single 100-gr.

 .25 WSSM
The new for 2004.25 WSSM came as something of a surprise to many, as it was widely supposed that Winchester (Olin) would base a new.257 Magnum on the longer WSM case.
The decision was made to base the new.25 caliber cartridge on the WSSM case instead.
Although the.25 WSSM is advertised as ballistically equivalent to the.25-06, it is clearly inferior if the two cartridges are loaded to similar pressures and tested in rifles with barrels of the same length.

 .223 WSSM
The.223 WSSM factory load that Olin/Winchester recommends for hunting antelope, deer, and fl bear drives a 64 grain Power Point bullet (SD.182) at an advertised muzzle velocity (MV) of 3600 fps and muzzle energy (ME) of 1841 ft. lbs.
The Winchester Super-X.223 WSSM factory load with the 64 grain Power Point bullet is simply inadequate for shooting North American deer and antelope, regardless of the velocity at which it can be driven by any.22 caliber cartridge ever produced.
The WSSM calibers are factory loaded close to the allowable maximum average pressure, which means that reloaders are unlikely to be able to safely better published velocities.

The.223 WSSM case has a water capacity of 55 grs., which is considerably more than the.22-250 Rem.
Well, all the information isn't in yet, but I think the.223 WSSM is going to be a great predator and varmint cartridge, particu-larly when a manufacturer gets it into a heavy-barreled varmint gun.

.25 Winchester Super Short Magnum (WSSM)
Like its predecessors (.223 WSSM and.243 WSSM), the.25 WSSM is reported to have equal exterior ballistics of longer cartridges of the same caliber.
Per Winchester Ammo, the ballistics of the.25 WSSM are equal to ballistics of the.25-'06 cartridges, with 14 percent less powder and less perceived recoil--all in a shorter action rifle (See full ballistics charts below).
Because the overall cartridge length of the new.25 WSSM is only 2.36 inches, the short action system on both rifles are a full half-inch shorter than previous WSSM models.

If you’re looking for a really sweet, light-kicking rifle with some reach, the.25 WSSM is ideal…the.25 WSSM takes a rightful place as a superb choice for small- to medium-sized big game like pronghorn, sheep and deer.
Plus there are the basic advantages inherent to the Short Magnum concept-moderate recoil due to the use of increased efficiency propellants and improved accuracy due to the uniform load density and consistent burn of a short, fat powder column.
