WWAN protocol that operates in 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz bands with a typical maximum data rate of 14.4 Kbps.
A WWAN uses various devices—telephone lines, satellite dishes, and radio waves—to service an area broader than that which can be covered by a WLAN, although typically with lower bandwidth.
WWAN technologies are often categorized into "generations" 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G.

Recent years have witnessed an explosive growth in the use of wireless wide-area networks (WWANs) such as CDPD, RAM and Ardis, with industry projections topping $2.5 billion by the year 2002.
In the typical WWAN deployment scenario, a mobile user connects over the WWAN network to a dedicated proxy in the corporate backbone, which then acts as the service point for all the requests from the mobile user.
WWAN network providers are typically unwilling to introduce TCP-aware smarts in the base station or mobile switching station.

Inter-working between WLANs and WWANs therefore serves as one way to overcome their respective limitations and provide broadband mobile public access to the Internet and enterprise intranets.
We shall study and understand the impact of WLANs on WWANs in terms of processing (i.e., signaling and real-time) requirements to support subscriber management, roaming and mobility management, billing and security management.
We shall also investigate the capacity mismatch problem between a WLAN (e.g., 11 Mbps for IEEE802.11b) and WWAN (e.g., 2 Mbps for UMTS) and study the implications of the capacity mismatch on end-to-end QoS assurance.
